The Big Green men's lacrosse team defeated the Catamounts, 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse won its third straight game on Tuesday when it defeated Vermont by a score of 8-7 at Scully-Fahey Field, holding a team that has scored an average of 12 goals per game to far fewer.

This is the Big Green's first win over the Catamounts since 2017. Dartmouth is now off to as good a start as back in 2020.

George Prince had his second hat trick in a row to lead the way with four points. Joe Azelby had five ground balls and Mitchell Myers went 8-18 (.444) in faceoffs. Daniel Hincks was great in net, making a career-high 20 stops.

An early first-quarter goal by Colin McGill put the Big Green up by one, a lead they held on to until a pair of Catamount tallies were scored 38 seconds apart in the final three minutes. A pass from Ben DiGiovanni about as deep in Dartmouth territory as you could get somehow made its way to Prince, who got the ball past Vermont's goalie with no time left on the clock (2-2).

A Matt Paul tally less than four minutes into the second quarter gave the lead back to the home team, but two in a row for the Catamounts put them ahead once again. The visitors enjoyed a lead for three minutes before tallies by Prince and Henry Bonnie 74 seconds apart shifted the lead back to Dartmouth. The Green tried their luck at another last-minute goal, but Vermont wasn't having it (5-4).

Tommy Rogan made it three in a row for Dartmouth five minutes into the third, scoring what turned out to be the only tally of the quarter. All was quiet for the last 10 minutes, minus some good looks and some nice saves (6-4).

Just over 90 seconds in to the fourth quarter, Prince completed the hat trick and gave the Big Green their biggest lead of the game. That lasted for just over two minutes, as Vermont scored its first of the second half after 34 minutes of scoreless play. Dartmouth did a good job keeping Vermont from scoring another and instead got one of its own when Prince ran out the shot clock and passed to Peter Lapina at the last second to make it an 8-5 contest.

This is where things got interesting. Two Vermont goals scored in a 40-second span got the visitors within one with 1:42 remaining. Things were dicey at the end, but one final save by Hincks with 28 seconds left was what did it.

Dartmouth will host St. John's on Saturday, March 19.
