NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Dartmouth knocked out Yale starter Colton Shaw in the first inning by scoring five runs and senior
Justin Murray kept the Bulldogs in check over a career-long 7.2 innings as the BIg Green (12-13, 5-4 Ivy) picked up a 11-2 victory at Yale (14-10, 5-4 Ivy). The win gave Dartmouth a series victory over the Bulldogs for the first time since 2015.
Murray, senior
Kade Kretzschmar and junior
Connor Bertsch each had three hits to pace the 16-hit attack, while junior
Kolton Freeman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit and one RBI for Dartmouth.
The first run came home on three consecutive one-out singles by
Tyler Robinson, Murray and Kretzschmar. Freeman then boomed a double to deep center, bringing home Murray and Kretzschmar. After the second out was recorded, sophomore
Nathan Cmeyla tripled off the base of the fence in center and sophomore
Max Zajec singled him home, prematurely ending Shaw's afternoon with the Big Green enjoying a 5-0 lead.
Yale got a run back in the fourth on a one-out walk and a Ben Metzner RBI double to left. But the Big Green, which had been held scoreless by southpaw reliever Reid Easterly since he entered in the first, put two runners on with two out in the fifth that brought about another pitching change. Junior
Connor Bertsch greeted Mick Kelley by dropping an RBI single into left to boost the lead back to five at 6-1.
Dartmouth extended its lead in the sixth with two more runs. Senior
Bryce Daniel was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second, then came around to score on a Robinson two-out single. Robinson also stole second, and Murray helped his own cause by lining a single to left with Robinson sliding across the plate head-first ahead of the throw.
Jake Gehri touched Murray for a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, his seventh of the season, but again the Big Green had a response in the very next inning. Dartmouth loaded the bases on a single sandwiched between two hit batters before Zajec walked to force in a run. After an infield fly, sophomore
Tyler Cox short-hopped the fence in left-center with a drive that was quickly retrieved, holding Cox to an RBI single for a 10-2 advantage.
In the eighth, Kretzschmar led off with a bloop double to shallow center and Freeman singled him home for the Green's 11th run. Teddy Hague smacked a two-run homer in the bottom half for the Bulldogs, his first of the year, to complete the scoring on the day.
Murray (2-3) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four in his 7.2 innings of work, and senior
Cole Roland recorded the final four outs to close out the win.
Shaw (2-3) took the loss for yielding five runs on six hits while recording just two outs. Metzner had two of the Bulldogs' nine hits while Hague scored twice and had two RBIs.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt at Albany (15-12) with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
