The Dartmouth lightweight squad looks to renew a long-time rivalry with Cornell with the Baggaley Bowl race being held Saturday morning. But unlike years past, the race will not be held on the Connecticut River.
Â
The seventh-ranked Big Green lightweights will be joining the heavyweight squad 18 miles north of town on picturesque Lake Morey, located in Fairlee, Vermont. Spectators are encouraged to watch the races from the Lake Morey Resort Lodge. The last time the race was competed was in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down.
Â
Dartmouth and the second-ranked Big Red have conducted lightweight competition since 1959. The Baggaley Bowl was introduced in 1970 and made retroactive to 1964. The trophy honors Bruce Baggaley, Dartmouth '63, who coached the Dartmouth lightweights in 1964 and the first cup was presented by that crew. The race was rowed at the Henley distance (with the exception of 1967 and 1969) until 1970 when it became a 2000-meter race. Cornell has won the cup 36 times to Dartmouth's 20 with the last one coming in 2012.
Â
The Big Green are coming off a Durand Cup defeat last weekend against No. 1 Yale here in Hanover.
