HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's hockey team gathered Tuesday evening to hand out team awards for the 2021-22 season.
Koenig Family Head Coach
Reid Cashman and his staff presented this year's honors to the five members of the team who were selected by a vote of their peers to be the recipient of this season's awards.
PHELAN AWARD (TEAM MVP): Clay Stevenson
The Phelan Award is annually chosen by teammates and presented to the player who, by demonstrating outstanding skill at his position, continued aggressiveness and team spirit, deserves to be named the "Most Valuable Player of the Year". This award is in honor of ardent Dartmouth hockey enthusiast, Martha M. Phelan, wife of John Phelan '28 and mother of John Phelan, Jr. '63, captain of the 1963 Dartmouth men's hockey team.
In his first season on the ice and between the pipes for the Big Green, Stevenson had quite the year. Stevenson started all 23 games he appeared in, making 709 saves with a goals against average of 2.70 for a save percentage of .922. He posted two shutouts, both at Thompson Arena. He was named the ECAC Hockey MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week on February 14.
At the end of the season, Stevenson earned several accolades. He was one of three finalists for ECAC Hockey's Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year Award, he earned a spot on both the All-ECAC Hockey Third Team and Rookie Team, as well as landing on the All-Ivy First Team.
MANSER AWARD (MOST IMPROVED): Steven Townley
Chosen by his teammates and coaches as the "Most Improved Varsity Player" during that season, the Manser Award is named for and given in honor of George 'Johnny' Manser '26, captain of the 1926 varsity team and the first president of the Friends of Dartmouth Men's Hockey.
Appearing in 24 games, Townley had a strong finish to the regular season, scoring three goals in the final four games. In the regular season finale, Townley scored with under one minute remaining to complete the two-goal comeback in just a matter of minutes.
BOOMA AWARD (ROOKIE OF THE YEAR) & LEADING SCORER AWARD (MOST POINTS): Sean Chisholm
The Booma Award is presented to the player who through determination, desire, dedication, and ability earns the 'Rookie of the Year' award. This award is given in honor of Roland C. Booma '30, an all-around Dartmouth athlete, including football and baseball in addition to his role with the hockey program.
A breakout freshman campaign earns Chisholm the Booma Award and the Leading Scorer Award. Chisholm finished the season with a team-high 23 points (9-14-23). Along the way, he was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week on February 21 after having a four-point week, scoring and assisting in the two wins over Princeton. Chisholm picked up an All-Ivy League Honorable Mention nod after his first season in the green and white.
SMOYER AWARD (UNSUNG HERO): Sam Hesler
The Smoyer Award is given to the player who has made the most unusual contribution to Dartmouth men's hockey each year. These contributions are measured more by intangible factors than statistical results and is commonly referred to as the team's "Unsung Hero". The award is in honor of Bill Smoyer '67, captain of the 1967 team and an outstanding soccer player who was sadly killed in Vietnam.
A leader on and off the ice, Hesler donned the "A" during the 2021-22 season when Dartmouth played at Thompson. One of the hardest-working players on the ice, Hesler led by example and certainly showed why he deserved the "A" during his final year in Hanover.
McINNIS AWARD (SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR): Harrison Markell
The McInnis Award is chosen by the players to honor the individual who has best reflected spirit, camaraderie, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth men's hockey and to Dartmouth College. Those same characteristics were demonstrated throughout his lifetime by Philip McInnis '36, president of the Friends of Men's Hockey from 1979 through 1984 and in whose honor this award is given each year.
Markell, the 121
st captain in program history, played in all 32 games in his final season for the Big Green. He finished with two goals and eight assists while leading the team with 50 blocks. Markell earned a spot on the Academic All-Ivy League team, was a candidate for the 2021-22 Senior CLASS Award, and was a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award.
