HANOVER, N.H. – Making their first appearance at Thompson Arena in nearly two months, the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Lake Superior State, 4-0, in front of more than 3,000 fans on the opening night of the 34
th Annual Ledyard Classic. The Big Green were led by a stellar performance between the pipes from goaltender
Cooper Black to go along with four different goal scorers.
With the win, the Big Green advance to the championship game, where they will take on No. 8 Maine after the Black Bears claimed a 5-2 victory over No. 18 RIT.
"It was a 60-minute effort," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "Special teams was great tonight. The power play created momentum, PK got the job done, including the 6v4 late. It was really selfless, lots of blocked shots and lots of physical play and now we earned the chance to play for a championship."
The scoring opened up in the second period as the Big Green found the back of the net twice during the middle frame. A tic-tac-toe goal from
Nikita Nikora to
Luke Haymes to
Cooper Flinton early in the second period gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. Nikora laid it off to Haymes for the quick pass across the front of goal for Flinton to tap in for his fifth goal of the year.
The Big Green lead was pushed to two just minutes later when
Joey Musa redirected a shot from
CJ Foley past Lake Superior State goaltender Ethan Langenegger.
Recording his first shutout of the year, Black made a big save late in the second period when Harrison was through on goal, but Black made the stop on the breakaway to keep the Lakers off the board.
Black was called upon once again early in the final period. Carter Batchelder picked up a loose puck and skated towards goal, but Black stood tall to make the pad save to keep the Big Green in front by two.
Ryan Sorkin got on the scoresheet as he tallied his first goal with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.
CJ Foley skated his way through a pair of Lake Superior defenders before making the back door pass for Sorkin to smash in from close range.
As time ran down, the Lakers went on the power play and pulled Langenegger to go with the 6v4 advantage.
Steven Townley capitalized on the empty net opportunity as he fired a long shot from the Big Green defensive zone that made its way into the back of the net.
"We had a lot of guys pitching in tonight blocking some shots, including some big ones in the last few minutes," said Black after the game.
The Big Green improve to 3-3-6 on the season while Lake Superior State drops to 9-10-1.
Speaking about the team's performance, Sorkin said, "We sacrificed a lot, coming back from break early, probably earlier than most teams. It felt great for us to get a win in the first game back."
