HANOVER, N.H. — On a Saturday afternoon that featured recognition for the program's four seniors and the first-ever honored jersey in the history of Dartmouth varsity athletics, the Big Green women's basketball team dropped a 54-37 decision to soon-to-be Ivy Madness participant Penn at Leede Arena.
With only the season finale remaining, Dartmouth dropped to 2-25 (0-13), while Penn improved to 17-9 (9-4).
The Big Green held a one-point edge after the opening quarter, but a second-quarter resurgence from the Quakers proved too much for Dartmouth to overcome on the historic day in Hanover.
Mekkena Boyd registered team-highs in points (12) and rebounds (8), while Penn was bolstered by Kayla Padilla's game-high 23 points. Cold 3-point shooting was a factor for Dartmouth, who shot just 1-of-15 from deep.
At halftime, a banner representing the No. 20 jersey of Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 was unveiled in the rafters of Leede Arena. It is the first jersey to be honored in the history of Dartmouth varsity athletics.
Mia Curtis led the fastbreak and dished to
Emma Koch, who finished with a layup as time expired in the first quarter, giving Dartmouth a 12-11 edge. Koch previously connected on a long 2-pointer to bring her team within one, 5-4, in the game's opening minutes. The Big Green later trailed 11-7 before Boyd knocked down a triple, the team's only one on the day, to come back within a point.
Grace Niekelski's work in the post midway through the second yielded Dartmouth's only points of the quarter while Penn's offense found its rhythm to the tune of 18 points. The Big Green faced their first double-digit deficit, 23-12, at the 6:20 mark when Padilla hit the first of her game-high five triples. Padilla scored again at the buzzer to give Penn a 29-14 lead entering the break.
Padilla picked up where she left off in the third, opening the second half with another 3-pointer. The Quakers held their first 20-point lead with Silke Milliman's offensive board and putback with just under four minutes remaining in the third. Padilla's fifth and final trey of the game connected in the waning seconds of the third. Facing a 45-26 deficit entering the fourth, Dartmouth tightened up defensively and held Penn to nine points for the remainder of the game.
Dartmouth is set to travel to Harvard for the season finale on Saturday, March 4. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
