HANOVER, N.H. — Yale ended the first half on a 13-0 run to open a 33-22 halftime lead, and the Bulldogs wouldn't look back as they defeated the Dartmouth men's basketball team, 72-53 on Saturday evening in Leede Arena. A
Jackson Munro 3-pointer put the Big Green ahead 22-20, but Dartmouth was held scoreless for the final 7:04 of the first half, facing a Yale team that leads the Ivy League and stood 16th nationally in scoring defense entering the day.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 16-6 and 6-3 in league play, avenging their home loss to Dartmouth on Jan. 6. The Big Green fall to 8-15 and 4-5 in the Ivy League with five games remaining.
"Yale is a great defensive team," said Dartmouth head coach
David McLaughlin. "They made us take some challenged shots. We missed some early rhythm shots. When things get hard, you have to embrace it together. The challenge for this group right now is learning how to embrace it and staying together."
Senior
Dame Adelekun led the Big Green with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three blocks, marking his sixth game this season with 3+ blocks and second in the last three games. Sophomore
Ryan Cornish added nine points while freshman
Jayden Williams followed up his career-high 19 points against Brown Friday night with eight points.
Four Yale players scored in double figures, led by 14 points from Matt Knowling.
"We didn't play to the best of our ability and when the ball's not going in, we're losing some confidence," said McLaughlin. "When things get hard, we need to learn how to embrace hard."
An early
Dusan Neskovic 3-pointer got the Big Green within 9-7 with 15:52 on the first-half clock, but Yale responded with seven straight points to take a 16-7 advantage with 12:32 remaining in the first.
Dartmouth had an answer, using a 12-2 run, capped off by a
Brandon Mitchell-Day turnaround jumper, to take its first lead of the game at 19-18 with 7:45 on the clock. A few minutes later, fellow freshman
Jackson Munro knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Big Green ahead, 22-20 with 7:04 left in the first.
From that point forward, Dartmouth didn't score the rest of the half, but the Big Green defense also held Yale down for long stretches. Dartmouth held the Bulldogs without a point for one stretch of 3:15, but Yale knocked down two 3-pointers in the final minute to turn a 27-22 advantage into a commanding 33-22 halftime lead.
Cornish opened the second half with a 3-pointer to get within eight, but Yale's Bez Mbeng immediately answered with a triple and the Big Green couldn't get back to within single digits the rest of the way. The Bulldogs' lead reached 20 for the first time at 54-34 with 11:31 remaining. The margin reached as much as 23, but a 7-0 Dartmouth surge got the Big Green within 2:52. Included was a four-point possession for Williams, who finished an and-one layup on the fast break, and he knocked down two free throws since a flagrant foul was called.
Williams wrapped up the game's scoring with a free throw in the final 10 seconds, to account for the 72-53 final.
For the game, the Big Green shot 35.8 percent from the floor (19-of-53), including 25.0 percent from 3-point range (7-of-28). Yale finished at 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and 42.1 percent from behind the arc (8-of-19). The Bulldogs held a 40-31 edge in rebounds.
Dartmouth returns to the floor next Saturday, wrapping up its four-game homestand by hosting Princeton at 2 p.m.
