CARY, N.C. — Dartmouth suffered a pair of defeats at the USA Baseball Complex on Saturday, taking the first game on the chin against Holy Cross, 17-4, before Penn State — in the first meeting with the Big Green in over 100 years — broke open a tie game in the sixth to come away with an 8-2 victory. The two losses left Dartmouth winless on the young season at 0-6, while the Crusaders improved to 2-7 and the Nittany Lions to 6-2.
Holy Cross jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first on a wild pitch and four more in the second with the big blow a two-run single off the bat of leadoff hitter Connor Cooney, who finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and those two RBIs.
Dartmouth got two back in its half of the second thanks to a run-scoring ground ball to short courtesy of freshman
Ivan Hoyt and a
Tyler Cox RBI single back through the box. But by the time the Big Green added to their total, they were trailing 12-2 in the sixth as the Crusaders put four on the board in the fourth and three more in the sixth. A Chris Baillargeon two-run double and a Chris Benton two-run blast, his second of the year, accounted for the four-run frame, and Jake McElroy contributed a two-run double of his own in the sixth.
A pair of Dartmouth freshmen keyed the team's two runs in the sixth as
Milo Suarez doubled and scored, and Hoyt doubled home another run. But after Holy Cross tacked on five more in the seventh and the Big Green failed to score in the seventh, the game was ended by the 10-run rule.
Jack Metzger (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing 12 runs, 11 earned, on 12 hits over 5.1 innings while striking out six. Cox had two of the Big Green's seven hits, senior
Kolton Freeman scored twice and Hoyt drove in two.
Jaden Wywoda (1-1) was credited with the victory for hurling 3.2 innings of relief while yielding two runs on three hits. The Crusader offense was a balanced attack as everyone in the lineup had at least one of the squad's 17 hits and scored at least one run with Sean Scanlon and Baillargeon driving in three apiece.
In the second game, Dartmouth trailed Penn State in the sixth, 2-0, when the Green finally solved Nittany Lion starter Daniel Ouderkirk and knotted the score at 2-2. Hoyt roped an RBI double to left to score senior
Connor Bertsch and send Ouderkirk to the showers having allowed one earned run in 5.1 stanzas while striking out 11. After the second out was recorded on strikes, junior
Tyler Robinson reached on an infield single to third and Hoyt came around to score when the throw to first was wild.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Penn State responded with three in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff single, three walks, two passes balls, a wild pitch and a double steal of home. The Nittany Lions tacked on three more the following frame, keyed by doubles off the bats of Tayven Kelly and Johnny Piacentino.
Earning the win in relief of Ouderkirk was Steven Miller (1-1), who twirled 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Kyle Hannon was the offensive catalyst for Penn State, going 1-for-3 with two walks, three runs and a pair of RBIs, and Harry had two of the team's eight hits while driving in two of his own.
Sophomore
Danny Will (0-1) took the loss after giving up six runs, only three earned, on three hits and four walks in two innings out of the bullpen. Junior right-hander
Clark Gilmore provided 4.1 solid innings of work in his first career start, giving up two runs on five hits and a pair of walks while fanning five. At the plate, Dartmouth mustered just six hits, going 2-for-18 with runners on base, with Robinson going 2-for-2 off the bench.
The Big Green will look to snap their six-game skid to start the season in a rematch with Wagner on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The Seahawks survived a 19-13 slugfest on Friday between the two teams. Notes: Dartmouth has not lost more than six games to start a season since the 2009 team opened 0-8 before ending the year with a 27-18 record and an Ivy League title … the last game between the Big Green and Penn State was on May 3, 1915 (won by PSU, 4-1).
