HANOVER, N.H. — Following a sensational senior season, Dartmouth men's basketball's
Dame Adelekun was named second team All-Ivy League on Tuesday. He was also named to the Academic All-Ivy team. This marks the fourth straight season that the Big Green have placed a student-athlete on the second team, following
Brendan Barry last year and Chris Knight consecutively before that. Adelekun averaged 13.8 points and 7.2 rebounds in 27 games (all starts), but was even better in league play.
In Ivy League games, Adelekun averaged 16.8 points (fifth in the league), 7.1 rebounds (fourth) and 3.1 assists (sixth). He was one of just two Ivy League players to finish in the top five in scoring and rebounding and top 10 in assists in league games, the other being Paxson Wojcik of Brown. Adelekun was also a dominant shot blocker all season, leading the league in that category overall (53) and in league games (28).
Adelekun entered the season as Dartmouth's lone returning starter and he wouldn't disappoint, taking his game to another level. He began by scoring, a then career-high, 21 points in the season opener at Fordham. He went on to eclipse 20 points on three other occasions, including a historic 41-point, 10-rebound effort vs. Columbia. That tied a Leede Arena record (and was the most ever scored by a Big Green player in Leede). Adelekun was named Ivy League Player of the Week after that effort. He became the first player nationally to record a 40+ point double-double in a regulation game this season. Adelekun also became the sixth Dartmouth player to score 40 points in a game in program history, becoming the first to do so since Jim Barton had 48 on Feb. 7, 1987 at Brown.
Adelekun also scored 25 points in a big home win over first-place Princeton, while adding 24 at Penn two weekends later. He ended his Dartmouth career by leading the team in points (19), rebounds (8), assists (5) and blocks (4) in Saturday's 87-82 Senior Day win over Harvard, helping the Big Green sweep the Crimson for the first time in 24 years.
Adelekun's 56.3 field goal percentage (all games) was good for fourth in the Ivy League. He extended his range as the season progressed, also knocking down 7-of-17 from behind the arc. Adelekun ended the season with three double-doubles, eclipsing 500 career points at Penn. He twice made ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day, following a block against Cornell and sequence of a dunk followed by block vs. Columbia.
The Big Green excelled early in Ivy League play, which included one stretch of winning three-of-four and four-of-seven. Dartmouth ended up beating the top three seeds in the standings, and is still the only team to win at Yale. The Big Green were in contention for Ivy Madness until the second-to-last weekend, winning six league games for a second straight season – the first time that's happened since 1995-96 and 1996-97.
Additionally, one student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the court as members of the 2022-23 Ivy League Men's Basketball Academic All-Ivy team. Along with Adelekun, the other honorees were Brown's Paxson Wojcik, Columbia's Zavian McLean, Cornell's Greg Dolan, Harvard's Idan Tretout, Penn's Lucas Monroe, Princeton's Tosan Evbuomwan and Yale's Michael Feinberg were each named to the team.
