SNSC swung by campus for an experience the children won’t soon forget

HANOVER, N.H. — Junior Jaren Johnson is serving as the athletics department's new Jaeger Civic Intern, and it didn't take long to get started with community work as he and other members of the men's basketball program hosted the Special Needs Support Center (SNSC) last week on campus. SNSC's visit included shooting around with the Big Green at Leede Arena, running the bases at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, visiting the football offices and Memorial Field and more.
The Jaeger Civic Intern is named in honor of Richard G. Jaeger, former Director of Athletics at Dartmouth College. The internship promotes and facilitates local community service by Dartmouth student-athletes. The intern, which is now Johnson, serves as a coordinator for matching community service by Dartmouth teams or groups to community needs and opportunities.
There quickly arose an opportunity to jump into action with the Special Needs Support Center, a small non-profit in White River Junction in Vermont. SNSC was hosting a free camp during its April break (April 10-14) for children with disabilities who were unable to attend more "traditional" camps, so it led to a visit to Dartmouth last Tuesday.
The children enjoyed meeting the Big Green student-athletes and interacting closely with Johnson, sophomore Romeo Myrthil, head student manager Sriyash Erra, along with several coaches who stopped by. After Leede Arena was baseball where the children were excited to hear they could run the bases. A trip to the football offices followed where the group was met by several staff members, including assistant coach Duane Brooks who spoke with the group. The day ended with a stop at field level at Memorial Stadium, where the youngsters were excited to race around the track.
Johnson will continue to work as a liaison in the department for community service opportunities.
