Lightweight Rowing Wins Two Petite Finals, Qualifies for IRA Nationals

The Varsity Eight finished with the third-fastest time of the day

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 9 Dartmouth lightweight rowing team won two petite finals on Sunday at the Eastern Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond. The Big Green won the petite finals in the Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight.

With the win in the Varsity Eight, the entire team qualified for the IRA national championship for the first time since 2014.

"Today was an enormous step for our program," said interim head coach Trevor Michelson. "Qualifying the team for the national championship in nearly a decade, highlighted by our second varsity making the grand final."

The Varsity Eight narrowly missed the grand final, but returned in the petite final, taking the win with a time of 5:37.365. The Big Green finished seventh overall but had the third-fastest time of the day.

The Second Varsity Eight advanced to the grand final after placing third in heat one. The Third Varsity Eight won the petite final with a narrow victory over Georgetown. The Fourth Varsity Eight finished fifth in the grand final.

"Their success today was largely due to an incredible body of work they have put in since September, and the great example set by our fifth-years," said Michelson. "I'm excited to see what this group can do at the IRA."

Next up for the Big Green is the IRA National Regatta June 2-4 in Mercer County, New Jersey.
