Setting the Scene
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team is set to play its second game in four days when the Big Green face Stony Brook on Tuesday night in a neutral-site game at Avon Old Farms in Connecticut. Dartmouth is coming off a thrilling 12-11 comeback win at Siena on Saturday, with sophomore
Brandon Ventarola scoring the game-winning goal with 3:28 remaining.
Against the Saints, Dartmouth went down 5-0 for the second straight road game to begin the season. At Bucknell, the Big Green got back to within one, but couldn't get over the hump, but Dartmouth was able to break through at Siena. The Big Green responded from the five-goal deficit to score 11 of the next 14 goals to take an 11-8 lead. Siena scored three times in 4:17 to pull even before Ventarola's tremendous individual effort to give Dartmouth a 12-11 lead, which proved to be the final score.
Ironically, three of Dartmouth's four games this season have started with 5-0 scores — including the Big Green taking a 5-0 lead in their home opener against Holy Cross. At Siena, junior
Colin McGill scored Dartmouth's first three goals coming in the span of 3:20 for his second hat trick of the season and 11th of his career. Sophomore
Cameron Brown scored three goals to tie a career high while sophomore
Hopper Zappitello tallied five points via two goals and three assists. Ventarola added three assists to go with his first goal of the season, the game-winner, marking his second game this season with 3+ helpers.
Fifth-year faceoff specialist
Mitchell Myers enjoyed a strong game, and week. He was 14-of-19 with nine groundballs against the Saints, one game after an 11-for-19 effort against Lehigh.
Tuesday will mark the Big Green's final game for more than a week due to the final exam period at Dartmouth. It will also be Dartmouth's second straight opponent that advanced to its conference championship game last season. Siena advanced to the MAAC final last season, while Stony Brook reached the America East title game. The Big Green return to action on Mar. 14 at Vermont, then travel to Georgetown on Mar. 19 before hosting Penn in their Ivy League opener on Saturday, Mar. 23.
