HANOVER, N.H. --The Dartmouth Big Green fell 19-6 in their first matchup of the season with the Lions Saturday.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League, while Columbia moves one game closer to .500, sitting at 11-12 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
The Lions got out to a quick start, putting five runs on the board in the first inning. Dartmouth cut into the lead in the second inning when Nathan Cmeyla knocked a solo home run to left field to make the score 5-1 Columbia through two full innings of play.
Both the Big Green and the Lions remained off the scoreboard in the third inning before trading runs in the fourth. Columbia added four runs to take a 9-1 lead but Cmeyla immediately got two runs back, hitting his second home run of the day to make the score 9-3.
Columbia added three runs before the Big Green got back on the board in the seventh inning, when back to back sacrifice flies made the score 12-5 in favor of the Lions. They did their most damage in the eighth inning, pushing seven runs home to make the score 19-5.
Dartmouth was able to add another run in their half of the ninth when Taer Rodriguez came in as a pinch hitter and drove in Jackson Hower on a single, making the 19-6 final score.
Eddie Albert started on the mound for the Big Green, getting only two outs and allowing five runs. Shane Bauer then came in in relief, pitching three innings and giving up four runs on four hits. Dartmouth used four more relief pitchers to combine for the remaining 5.1 innings. Tyler Cortland and Brady Chappell combined for 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings for the Big Green.
The Big Green and Lions will play the remaining two games of the series tomorrow, with a doubleheader scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
