LOOKING TO END THE SEASON ON A HIGH
After only taking one game on the road against the Penn Quakers, the Big Green return home for their final game of the 2024 season, welcoming the Maine Black Bears to town and looking to close the season in the win column.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Big Green travelled to Philadelphia to face the Penn Quakers in the final Ivy League series of the season. While Penn had the opportunity to clinch a spot in the Ivy League tournament, Dartmouth looked to play spoiler and continue to improve this season.
In game one of the series against the Quakers, the Big Green got on the board first, opening a 1-0 lead on a
Zackarie Casebonne home run. The Quakers responded right back, knocking a two-run shot of their own to take a two-run lead. The Big Green did not stress though, adding five runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Elliot Krewson knocked in a run with a single before
Nathan Cmeyla drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run. Back-to-back singles by
Max Zajec and
Jackson Hower scored three runs before the Quakers got out of the inning.
The Big Green added a run in the fifth when Zajec collected his third RBI of the day on a single. Penn got a run back in their half of the fifth on a solo home run, but the Big Green kept tacking on runs in the sixth, plating another five runs. Cmeyla got the offense going again, knocking a double to score a run and send
Kolton Freeman to third. Freeman then scored on a wild pitch before Hower collected another RBI single. Two walks with the bases loaded scored two more runs for the Big Green, securing the 12-3 victory.
Despite the Big Green taking the early lead in the second game of the series on a Freeman single, Penn scored early and often over the next two games, putting each out of reach for the Big Green. A four run first inning and two five run innings gave the Quakers the edge in game two of the series, en route to a 16-4 win.
Dartmouth and Penn played only eight innings in the final game of the series and while Cmeyla and Zajec continued to produce offensively for the Big Green, every part of the Quakers' lineup was contributing as Penn cruised to a 24-5 victory to close Ivy League play.
SCOUTING MAINE
The Maine Black Bears, currently sitting at 10-32 and 6-11 in the America East, are coming off three losses to UMBC and riding a four-game losing streak into Hanover. Still with six conference games to play, the Black Bears will look to build momentum while visiting the Big Green.
The Black Bears are led offensively by Jeremiah Jenkins. With a .335 batting average, 43 RBI, and 19 home runs, Jenkins not only leads the team, but sits high above the rest in those three categories. Jenkins has nine doubles, good for second best on the team, only behind Zach Martin and Jake Marquez who are tied with 10 two-baggers on the season.
On the mound, Jason Krieger has started the most games for the Black Bears, having made 12 starts and one relief appearance. His 6.00 earned run average is fourth best but his 45 strikeouts lead the team. Gianni Gambardella has made eight starts but has pitched 47.1 innings, the second best on the team, behind only Krieger. Gambardella also has 44 strikeouts on the year and has walked 19 batters.
Marshall Smaracko has made 17 relief appearances this season, posting an 8.40 ERA in 15 innings.
AN UPDATED SCHEDULE
The Big Green and Black Bears were originally supposed to play on Wednesday, but expected rain in Hanover has pushed the game one day earlier. First pitch for the game between Dartmouth and Maine on Tuesday will be at 3 p.m.
