CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Baseball battled No. 10 Virginia Friday for the series opener against the Cavaliers and the Big Green's fourth straight game against a ranked opponent.

Despite getting multiple base runners on in the final few innings, Dartmouth was unable to pull close to the Cavaliers, falling 11-3.
Â
Each team retired the side in order in the first inning, but the offense picked up in the second inning for the Cavaliers. Three singles, a hit by pitch, and a fielding error pushed four runs across for Virginia as they took a 4-0 lead into the third inning.
Â
Both sides were set down quickly in the third, but Virginia bounced back in the fourth, hitting a home run down the right field line to extend its lead to five.
Â
The Big Green were able to get on the board in the fifth, as
Ethan Brown and
A.J. DeMastrie led off the inning with a double and single.
Jackson Hower bounced into a fielder's choice to score Brown from third, making the score 5-1.
Â
In the Cavaliers half of the inning, a double and two singles added two more runs for Virginia, extending its lead to six runs. Virginia added two more runs in the sixth inning, making the score 9-1.
Â
A double, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases for the Big Green in the seventh, but Dartmouth was only able to pick up one run as
Axel Riess drew a walk to force in a run. Virginia quickly responded, hitting its second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot, to put the Cavaliers up nine.
Â
The Big Green had hope in the ninth when Brown led off the inning with an inside the park home run. Another DeMastrie single and a hit by pitch put two Dartmouth base runners on with two outs, but the Big Green were unable to push any more runs across, falling to the Cavaliers, 11-3.
