HANOVER, N.H. – The baseball team played their first midweek nonconference game since Ivy League play started Tuesday, defeating the UMass Lowell Riverhawks 11-5.
The Big Green earned their second straight win over the Riverhawks, the first time the Big Green have done so since 2015.
Dartmouth opened the scoring in the first inning, taking a one run lead on a fielder's choice. It added two more runs in the second inning when
Taer Rodriguez doubled to drive in
Axel Riess and
A.J. DeMastrie singled through the left side of the infield to score Rodriguez.
Only down by three runs, UMass Lowell was able to pull within one in the fourth inning. A leadoff home run, a walk, and back-to-back singles made it a 3-2 game in favor of the Big Green.
Dartmouth wasted no time responding, getting one run back in its half of the fourth. DeMastrie collected his second RBI of the day, bringing Riess home on a sacrifice fly.
The Riverhawks' offense stayed hot into the fifth inning as UMass Lowell plated three runs on two hits and two walks to take a 5-4 lead over the Big Green.
The game remained in favor of UMass Lowell until the sixth when
Elliot Krewson singled to drive home Riess and tie the game.
In the seventh inning, Dartmouth broke the game open, plating six runs.
Chris Miller singled to center field and found himself on second base due to an error.
Tyler Sirchia then collected his first collegiate career hit and RBI, scoring Miller to put the Big Green on top.
Three straight singles by
Camden Rush, Riess, and Rodriguez scored two more runs, making it an 8-5 game. DeMastrie then doubled to plate one more run and force a Riverhawks pitching change, but the Big Green continued to swing the bat.
Ethan Brown doubled with two outs to score two more runs, making it an 11-5 game and securing the victory for the Big Green.
Andrew Lombana got the start for Dartmouth, allowing three hits in three innings pitched. He walked four but pitched around trouble for his second scoreless outing of the season.
Matt Carey was the second Big Green pitcher, Tuesday, allowing five runs on six hits in two innings.
Jeff Lee shined in his second outing of the season, allowing only one hit in 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. Lee retired ten straight batters, including a stretch of five straight by way of the strikeout. In total, Lee fanned six batters and collected two fly outs and two ground outs.
Trey Sejnoha closed the game for the Big Green, throwing 0.2 scoreless innings, sealing the victory.
The Big Green will return to action this weekend for their second straight Ivy League series at home. Dartmouth will welcome the Harvard Crimson for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday. Last season, the Big Green took one game against the Crimson, a 6-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
