STOCKHOLM, Sweden – On Sunday, former Dartmouth forward Drew O'Connor '22 and his Team USA teammates captured a gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Championship for the first time since 1933. O'Connor and the Americans defeated Switzerland 1-0 in overtime to win the gold medal.
O'Connor skated in all 10 games for Team USA while scoring a goal and adding three assists. He finished the tournament with a +6 rating as he played key minutes for the Americans.
Following the game, he spoke to IIHF.com. "It feels awesome," said O'Connor. "It's been a long time coming. U.S. hockey has been growing and getting better every year. We haven't had success here, but you've seen it in the World Juniors and things like that."
This is the second time in his career that O'Connor suited up for Team USA in the IIHF World Championships; in 2023 he played 10 games for Team USA while scoring three goals and adding five assists.
O'Connor is the first Big Green player to play for Team USA in the World Championships since Lee Stempniak '05 played in the 2009 IIHF World Championships. O'Connor is the first Big Green alumni to win a gold medal with Team USA.
The former Dartmouth standout will shift his focus to the 2025-26 NHL as he prepares for his sixth NHL season and first full season with the Vancouver Canucks.
