BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Dartmouth baseball faced Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, wrapping it's opening weekend. The Runnin' Bulldogs exploded for a four-run third inning, going on to defeat the Big Green, 6-2.
With the loss, Dartmouth moves to 1-2 on the season.
Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the third inning, pushing four runs across to take a 4-0 lead over Dartmouth. The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded two hits, two walks, a hit by pitch, and reached on a Dartmouth error in the inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs followed with two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth, as the Big Green struggled in the field, committing three errors in the frame.
Dartmouth got on the board in the sixth.
A.J. DeMastrie singled to left field, getting a runner on base with two outs.
Stefan Di Corrado then drew a walk, sending
Axel Riess to the plate. Riess ripped a double to score DeMastrie, making it a 6-1 game.
The Big Green threatened to score again in the eighth inning.
Gus Begert came into the game as a pinch hitter, drawing the walk.
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger made his collegiate debut for Dartmouth, knocking a single to put two on with one out. Di Corrado drew a walk to load the bases, but the Runnin' Bulldogs struck out the next two Dartmouth batters to get out of the jam.
In the ninth, Dartmouth loaded the bases again. With one out,
Henry Murray singled before Nico Bañez and Begert walked to load the bases with two outs. Niswonger was hit by the pitch to force in another run, but that was all the Big Green would score, as Dartmouth fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 6-2.
On the mound,
Eddie Albert got the start, tossing 2.2 innings. He gave up four runs, three earned on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Albert now has 98 career strikeouts.
Marco Dumsky made his first appearance since early 2025 in relief of Albert, giving up two runs, both unearned, on one hit in 2.1 innings of work. Dumsky also fanned four.
Sophomore
Nate Kugler who missed his first-year due to injury, made his first appearance with the Big Green, throwing one scoreless inning.
Following a 1-2 opening weekend, Dartmouth will shift its focus to its next matchup, traveling to take on the reigning national champions, LSU. The Big Green will face the Bulldogs on Friday, February 27 at 7:30 ET, play a neutral site game against Grambling State on Saturday, February 28 at 2 p.m. ET, before wrapping the weekend against the Tigers on Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. ET.
