HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth baseball wrapped up a four-game homestand, Wednesday, facing off against the Siena Saints. In a 1-1 game through 5.5, the Big Green bats came to life, using a four-run six inning to earn a 5-3 win over the Saints.
Â
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 8-18 overall.
Â
The Big Green opened the scoring early, plating one run in the first inning. Nico Bañez continued to improve his team leading on base percentage, drawing a walk to lead off the inning.
Milo Suarez then reached after being hit, putting two runners on with only one out and bringing
Stefan Di Corrado to the plate. Di Corrado singled, knocking in his 12
th run of the season to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Â
Both teams would scatter base runners over the next few innings until the Saints were able to pull even in the fourth. A hit by pitch, single, and walk loaded the bases with no outs and while a ground out scored the tying run, it stopped Siena's momentum, as the half inning ended knotted at one.
Â
Dartmouth's offense came to life in the sixth, as the Big Green plated four runs on six hits. With one out, Di Corrado singled before advancing to third on a
Henry Murray double.
Taer Rodriguez then drove in both runners on a single up the middle, advancing to second on the throw.
Â
"We were prepped for a lot of off-speed and we ended up honestly getting more fastballs than we thought," Rodriguez said. "I got myself behind in a lot of counts, had to hit from two strikes, but I ended up coming through in some good spots."
Â
The Saints were able to record the second out of the inning, cutting down Rodriguez on the base paths, but the momentum continued for the Big Green.
Sam Andersen singled before Dartmouth recorded its second double of the inning, this time off the bat of
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger, scoring Andersen to make it a 4-1 game. The Big Green added one more as
Alejandro Puig recorded his first hit of the day, extending Dartmouth's lead to four.
Â
Siena pressured in the eighth, scoring two runs on three hits, including a double of their own, but Nate Matoush got the Big Green out of the jam, keeping his team in front, 5-3.
Matoush got the final four outs of the game, earning his first save of the season thanks to a scoreless and hitless outing.
Â
Andrew Lombana got the start for the Big Green and was dominant through seven innings. He allowed only two hits through the first three innings, and pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth, allowing just the one Siena run. Lombana retired the Saints in order three times, including back-to-back times in the fifth and sixth innings.
Â
He finished the day giving up one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings, earning his first win of the season.
Â
Head Coach
Blake McFadden praised his starter's performance, describing it as outstanding.
Â
"His ability to get ahead of hitters today [was impressive]," McFadden said. "Use his secondary pitches, I thought he threw his changeup really well today and just did a good job of constantly competing and realistically, laid it on the line for his teammates."
Â
Aidan Plummer came in for the eighth, giving up two runs on three hits and recording two outs.
Â
The Big Green will now shift their focus to Harvard, as Dartmouth continues Ivy League play on the road this weekend against the Crimson. Dartmouth won the series last season in Hanover, taking two of three.
Â
"These midweek games are important. They are opportunities to get momentum headed into the weekend and really get ourselves headed in the right direction," McFadden said. "Harvard's a good ball club. They have some really good starting pitching. They're pitching it really well, so I'm excited to see our guys compete down at Harvard this weekend."
Â
Rodriguez echoed his coach, adding, "Getting wins in midweeks is always one of the most important things as a preparation for playing in [Ivy League] games. We're going out to Harvard so playing at home was definitely an advantage to get nice and comfortable. But this win was huge for our momentum headed into the weekend."
Â
The two teams are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 11:30 a.m. before closing the series with a single game on Sunday, April 19 at 12 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ or you can follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
