HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth baseball and Harvard wrapped the regular season series with a doubleheader, Saturday. The Big Green split the day, earning the 12-inning 6-4 win to clinch the series before falling in the series finale, 7-6.
Dartmouth now moves to 10-19 overall and 6-9 in Ivy League play.
Game 1: Dartmouth 6, Harvard 4 (12 innings)
The Big Green and Crimson each traded a base runner in the first inning, but the game remained scoreless heading into the second.
Dartmouth then opened the scoring, taking a 2-0 lead on three hits and capitalizing on a Crimson error.
Chris Miller led off the inning with a single, later stealing second.
Stefan Di Corrado then ripped a double to score Miller, making it a 1-0 game.
Taer Rodriguez grounded out, recording the first out of the inning, but advancing Di Corrado to third. He would later come home to score on a
Sam Andersen RBI single.
The Big Green extended their lead to three in the fifth, taking advantage of four free passes.
Alejandro Puig was hit by the pitch, Nico Bañez drew a four-pitch walk, and
Milo Suarez was hit at the plate to load the bases.
Tyler Sirchia then drew a walk to score Puig.
Harvard responded in the fifth, tying the game on two hits. A single, hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases, before another walk scored a run and pulled the Crimson within two. A two-run single then tied the game at three.
The Big Green went in order in the ninth and while the Crimson singled, the game went to extras knotted at three.
Dartmouth was able to push one run home in the tenth, taking a 4-3 lead. Bañez walked before
A.J. DeMastrie singled, sending him to third. Suarez bounced into a fielder's choice to record the first out of the inning but scored Bañez to give the Big Green the lead.
Harvard responded in their half of the inning. A leadoff walk, stolen base, and a ground out put the tying run 90-feet from home. An RBI single scored the run, knotting the game at four and sending it to the 11
th.
The Crimson had a baserunner in the 11th, but the Big Green got out of the inning.
Bañez once again led off the inning with a walk in the 12
th inning. With one out, Suarez drew a walk and Bañez was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. Suarez later stole second, sending
Henry Murray to the plate.
He ripped a single up the middle, scoring both base runners to give the Big Green a 6-4 lead.
Harvard out a runner on in the 12
th, but the Big Green held on for the win and clinched the series victory.
Nate Isler got the start, allowing three runs on three hits in 4.1 innings. He fanned nine, a season high, and dealt three walks.
Kyle Klaric-Schell pitched the next 4.1, allowing three hits in his scoreless appearance. He struck out four and walked one.
Mac Burke finished the game, allowing one on three hits in 3.1 innings. He earned his second win in as many days, improving to 3-3 on the season. Burke walked one and fanned two.
Game 2: Harvard 7, Dartmouth 6
In game two of the doubleheader, the Big Green looked for the series sweep. Despite taking a 6-2 lead into the fifth, the Crimson powered back with a four-run eighth to defeat Dartmouth. 7-6.
The Big Green picked up game two where they left off in game one, taking the lead in the first.
A.J. DeMastrie ripped a triple on only the second pitch he saw, later coming around to score on a
Milo Suarez single.
Harvard wasted no time responding, plating two runs on a homerun in its half of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead over Dartmouth.
The Big Green opened the game in the fourth, scoring five runs to take a 6-2 lead.
Taer Rodriguez led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Sam Andersen then ripped a double, tying the game at two.
DeMastrie continued to impress at the plate, hitting his second home run of the season to give his team a 4-2 lead.
Before the inning would end,
Milo Suarez walked and
Chris Miller and
Henry Murray reached on errors, scoring two more runs to make it a 6-2 game.
Harvard got one back in the fifth, capitalizing on two hits to cut Dartmouth's lead to three.
The Crimson bats came to life in the eighth, as they scored four runs on two hits and three free bases, taking a 7-6 lead over the Big Green.
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger recorded a pinch-hit single in the ninth, but the Big Green were unable to score any more runs, as Harvard avoided the series sweep.
Marco Dumsky got the start for the Big Green, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits in five innings. He walked two and added seven strikeouts, a season high.
Nate Matoush pitched the next 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on two walks in 2.1 innings of work. He also struck out four.
Trey Sejnoha wrapped the game, pitching the final 0.2 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and strikeout.
