HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth baseball opened an eight game homestand Tuesday, welcoming the Holy Cross Crusaders to Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park for a nonconference matchup.
Â
The Big Green came out on top of a game that saw four lead changes, earning the 4-3 walk off victory over the Crusaders, improving to 11-19 on the season.
Â
Dartmouth threatened to score early, loading the bases with two outs on a double, walk, and hit by pitch in the first inning, but the Crusaders got out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Holy Cross immediately responded with a two-out bases loaded opportunity of their own, jamming the bases on three straight walks.
Andrew Lombana recorded a strikeout to get the last out of the inning, as the game remained knotted at zero.
Â
The Crusaders broke the tie in the third, capitalizing on Dartmouth errors. A fielding error put the leadoff runner on, before he eventually stole second and advanced to third on another Big Green error. He came home to score on a sacrifice fly, giving Holy Cross the 1-0 lead.
Â
Dartmouth drew even in the fourth.
Taer Rodriguez singled and stole second, later coming home to score thanks to an
Alejandro Puig single.
Â
In the sixth, Rodriguez once again gave the Big Green the lead, this time hitting his second home run of the season to pull his team in front, 2-1.
Â
The Crusaders wasted no time responding, as their leadoff hitter in the seventh hit a solo home run to once again tie the game.
Â
The Big Green were able to record one out after the home run, before two batters were hit. The Crusaders then ripped a single loading the bases, but Dartmouth's third error of the game once again gave Holy Cross the one-run lead.
Â
A 1-2-3 Holy Cross top of the eighth inning swung momentum in Dartmouth's favor. In the bottom half of the inning,
Tyler Sirchia reached on an error by the Crusaders pitcher.
Mason Smith replaced Sirchia on the base path, and later advanced to second on another error by the pitcher. A two-out walk then forced a pitching change, but
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger was not phased, as he ripped an infield single to score Smith and tie the game.
Â
The Crusaders went in order again in the ninth, setting up an opportunity for another Dartmouth walk-off. Puig drew a walk and Nico Bañez was hit by the pitch, putting two on with no outs.
Sam Andersen bunted to advance the runners, before
Milo Suarez recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Puig to seal Dartmouth's 4-3 victory.
Â
Andrew Lombana got the start for Dartmouth, giving up one unearned run on three walks in three innings of work. He also fanned two.
Â
Aidan Plummer pitched the next 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits. Plummer also added a strikeout.
Â
Trey Sejnoha wrapped the game and earned his third win of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out four.
Â
The Big Green will be back in action this weekend when they host the Princeton Tigers for a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25 and wrap the series with a single game on Sunday, April 26 at 12 p.m.
