HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth baseball continued a stretch of eight straight games at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, Saturday, hosting Princeton for a special weekend. In addition to fighting for a spot in the Ivy League tournament, the Big Green were honoring former Head Coach Bob Whalen, who retired following the 2025 season.
Princeton played to a win in game one, but the Big Green responded in game two, as a fifth inning grand slam off the bat of
Tyler Sirchia helped secure the win and pull the series even.
With the doubleheader split, Dartmouth moves to 12-20 overall and 7-10 in Ivy League play.
Game 1: Princeton 6, Dartmouth 1
Pitching impressed through the early stages of game one between the Tigers and Big Green, as the game remained scoreless into the fifth inning. Dartmouth had a runner in scoring position in the second while Princeton had a runner on second in both the first and fourth inning, but neither team was able to take the early lead.
Princeton finally broke open the scoreless tie in the fifth. Back-to-back singles and a one out double scored two, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. They added one more in the inning thanks to a bunt single and an error, taking a three-run lead into the halfway mark.
The Tigers added a run in the sixth, capitalizing on a walk, stolen base and single, extending their lead to four.
Princeton would extend its lead to six, adding a run in the eighth and the ninth before Dartmouth was able to get on the board.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Austin Moran singled to left and took two bases on a fielding error.
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger drove him home, singling to left field to make it a 6-1 game, but with two outs, the Big Green could not score any more runs, falling to the Tigers.
On the mound,
Nate Isler made his team leading ninth start, giving up four runs, three earned on six hits in seven innings of work. Isler also fanned a season and career high 11 batters.
Trey Sejnoha pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on one hit. He walked two and added three strikeouts.
Game 2: Dartmouth 8, Princeton 2
Game two of the doubleheader started similarly to game one, as neither team was able to generate much offense early. The Tigers did have a baserunner in each of the first two innings, but Dartmouth caught two batters on the base path, eliminating any Tigers momentum.
In the third inning, Princeton was able to break through. A batter reached after being hit by the pitch, later advancing to second. A single drove him in, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Big Green immediately responded, taking the lead in their half of the third inning.
Alejandro Puig drew a walk, and
Nico Bañez was hit by the pitch, eventually executing a perfect double steal to put two runners in scoring position with one out.
Sam Andersen recorded the second out of the inning but scored Puig to tie the game. Bañez later gave his team the lead, scoring on a passed ball.
Princeton threatened again, getting singles in each of the next two innings, but they never made it off first, as it remained a 2-1 game in favor of Dartmouth.
The Big Green opened up the game in the fifth, plating six runs on three hits to take an 8-1 lead. The Tigers got the first out but walked three straight batters to load the bases for
Tyler Sirchia. The sophomore, hitting in the four spot as the designated hitter, did exactly what he was meant to, hitting his second home run of the season and first career grand slam to give Dartmouth a 6-1 lead, forcing a pitching change.
With a new pitcher in the game, Dartmouth did not let up.
Milo Suarez drew the Big Green's fourth walk of the inning, advancing to third on a Jack-Espiritu Niswonger single.
Taer Rodriguez then ripped a double to score Suarez and
Austin Moran recorded a sacrifice fly to score Niswonger, making it an 8-1 game.
The Tigers got one run back in the seventh. A leadoff single, wild pitch, and a ground out advanced the runner to third with two outs. Princeton then ripped a double down the right field line to score run, but the batter pushed for three, and a great relay throw from Andersen in right and Moran at second got the runner, limiting the Tigers' damage.
Princeton continued to push in the eighth. Nate Matoush entered the game in relief of
Marco Dumsky, giving up two walks and a double to load the bases with no outs.
Dartmouth made another pitching change, bringing in
Mac Burke. The senior wasted no time, striking out the first two batters he faced and recording the final out via groundout to get his team out of the inning unscathed.
The Tigers recorded one more hit in the ninth, but Dartmouth held on for the 8-2 victory.
Dumsky earned his first win of the season thanks to his most impressive outing of the year, the junior allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He walked two and added three strikeouts.
Matoush came on for the eighth, allowing one hit and two walks.
Burke finished the game for the Big Green, allowing one hit and fanning three in two innings of work.
