HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Dartmouth Big Green (3-2, 2-2) overpowered the Colgate Raiders (3-5-2, 0-2-1) in a 6-3 win tonight in Starr Rink. Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was the hero for Dartmouth as the junior made 37 saves in the win for a new career high.
“Huge win for our team,” said head coach Bob Gaudet. “We came out and scored early which was the difference in the game. We got to their goalie and that helped. We got some very timely goals tonight along with some balanced scoring. Mike Devine made some great, great saves. He played a spectacular game.”
Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 3-0 after the first period of play. The Big Green got on the board early with a power play goal by T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) at 1:01 into the game. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) picked up the puck at center ice passing to Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) on the right side point. Swallow passed across the ice in front of the net to Galiardi who punched it in from the left side circle.
The second Big Green goal came almost a minute later as Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) played give-and-go with Brandon Harrington (Rochester, Minn.) coming down the ice. Harrington took a quick shot and was there for the rebound and put-back. Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) also assisted.
The third goal of the stanza was potted when David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) beat Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich on the goalie's stick side with less than four minutes to go. Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) passed to Jones from the side of the net as Jones was able to slide the puck between Dekanich's leg and the post. Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) also assisted. Dartmouth ended the period outshooting the Raiders 12-4.
Dartmouth increased its lead midway through the second period. A pass to the short side by defenseman John Gibson (Okotoks, Alta.) allowed Grecu to chip it in for the junior's first goal of the season. Johnson also picked up his second assist of the night.
Grecu potted his second of the night at 19:01 into the final stanza when the junior took a shot from the right side circle as Dekanich thought the puck went high and did nothing to stop it. That goal chased Dekanich from the net. Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Shields were credited with assists.
The Raiders finally got one back at 16:08, breaking up Devine's third career shutout. Mike Werner from Ben Camper and Nick St. Pierre gave Colgate its first goal. The Raiders came alive, potting another one less than two minutes later when Tom Riley beat Devine glove side.
Shribman gave Dartmouth a four-goal advantage as he notched his first of the game at 8:34. Shribman's goal skimmed the top of the net so hard it knocked off netminder Justin Kowalkoski's water bottle as Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) and Pritchard were credited with the helpers.
Colgate scored its final goal at the 14:00 minute mark of the final stanza.
The Big Green ended up outshooting Colgate 40 to 26. Dartmouth's special teams were up to the task allowing just one Raider power play goal on 13 chances.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow night traveling to Cornell for a 7:00 pm matchup against the Big Red from Lynah Rink.
