COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored four goals, but it wasn't enough as the No. 13 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team fell to No. 6 Maryland, 13-8, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Big Green (3-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring in a two-minute span from 28:06 to 26:12. Junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) started things off on a feed from Szefi, and senior Kristen Zimmer (Alexandria, Va.) scored the first of her two for a 2-0 lead.
Szefi made it 3-0 before Maryland's Krista Pellizzi broke through. For Dartmouth, senior Annie Leibovitz (Boulder, Colo.) and Zimmer pushed the lead back to 5-1 with 23:22 left in the half.
The Terps answered with four straight goals, including two by Delia Cox, for a 5-5 tie at halftime.
Maryland (6-3) scored six of the first seven goals in the second half, taking control with a six-goal advantage. Cox potted her third of the day on a free position shot, making it 12-6 with 9:23 on the clock.
Szefi scored all three Dartmouth goals in the second half and also had one assist for a five-point game. In shots, the Terps had a slight lead over the Big Green, 29-25, while Dartmouth had the edge in draw controls, 13-10.
In the nets, Dartmouth senior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) had nine saves, while Maryland's Allie Buote made 10.
The Big Green opens the Ivy League campaign this weekend, hosting Yale on Saturday and Columbia on Sunday. Game time both days is 1 o'clock at Scully-Fahey Field.
