HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) had five goals to lead the No. 19 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 victory over No. 16 Stanford on Thursday afternoon at Scully-Fahey field. The Big Green improves to 5-3 overall, while the Cardinal falls to 5-4 on the season.
"I thought our team played with a lot of discipline in the midfield and the attack. We controlled the tempo and took them out of sync. Even when we got a little tired, we dug in and battled back and play with a lot of guts," said head coach Amy Patton.
Dartmouth took a quick 2-0 lead on goals by sophomore Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.), but Stanford answered with three tallies to take a 3-2 lead. Hazel scored her second goal of the game with 21:26 remaining in the half to tie the score and then junior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tacked on a goal to put the Big Green back on top, 4-3.
Stanford's Megan Burker scored off a free position shot to tie the game at 4-4, but Pittman followed with two straight goals for Dartmouth. Michelle DeChant scored her second goal of the game for the Cardinal with 1:45 left in the half to bring her team within one at 6-5.
Pittman and the Big Green took control in the second half, however. The junior scored the first two goals of the second period off of free position shots and Hazel tallied her third goal of the game to provide Dartmouth with a 9-5 cushion with 20:34 remaining.
The Big Green's lead was never seriously threatened after that. Junior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) had two goals down the stretch and finished with five points. Stanford was led by Daphne Patterson and DeChant, who each had three goals.
Dartmouth outshot Stanford, 34-20, including a 21-10 advantage in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) made eight saves, while Stanford's Laura Shane had 16 stops.
The Big Green will return to Ivy League play on Saturday, April 1, when it travels to Providence to face Brown. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
