Hanover, N.H. ? Three different players scored goals as the Dartmouth women's soccer team took a resounding 3-1 victory over Cornell tonight. The Big Green honored its four seniors prior to the contest.
The Big Green dominated the game, outshooting Cornell 19-5 in a game in which 19 Dartmouth players saw action with nine taking a shot.
"This win speaks volumes about the character of our players to still want to work hard and win games though we are out of the Ivy race," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "I am delighted for our four seniors - they are talented players but also great people who deserved their recognition and reward tonight."
After a frustrating start to the game full of near misses, including a rocket by Jenny Stone (Wilmette, Ill.) that hit the post in the 33rd minute, Dartmouth grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. For the third time in the last four games, sophomore Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) scored off an assist from freshman Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.). Tata fed the ball in from the left side and Hubbard sent a nice arcing kick into the top right corner of the goal at 40:32.
The Big Green took its 1-0 lead into the half, with a 7-2 advantage in shots as well.
Dartmouth got to work quickly in the second half, attacking early on. The Big Green drew a free kick just beyond the midfield circle facing the Cornell goal in the 49th minute. Sophomore sniper Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) stepped up to the spot and hammered a beautiful goal into the top right corner from 45 yards out. It was Goldstein's fifth goal of the season, with all five coming from outside the 18-yard box.
The Big Green kept the pressure on but had several shots go just shy of the goalmouth. Just after a shot by Tata hit the crossbar, Dartmouth struck gold. Sophomore Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) sent a ball ahead to senior Monica Martin de Bustamante (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) who scored a dramatic goal one-on-one with the keeper. Martin de Bustamante attacked from right center and sent a great low shot past Jodi Palmer at 87:55.
The goal was the first of the season for the senior co-captain who returned from injury mid-year and fittingly got the tally late in the game on senior day.
Coach Hind subbed out the senior class, Martin de Bustamante, Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.), Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) and Carolyn Wendell (San Francisco, Calif.), just after the third goal.
Cornell regrouped quickly after the Big Green took a 3-0 lead and took advantage of a defensive miscommunication for Mariye Wick to score her first goal of the season at 88:05.
The Big Green held out to take the 3-1 win in the end. Webb, a senior goalkeeper, made two saves while Stanley was outstanding defensively and Wendell played up in midfield and made some great runs for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth moves to 4-9-2, 2-3-1 Ivy while Cornell drops to 4-11, 0-6 Ivy.
The Big Green heads to Brown next Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Bears.
