Hanover, N.H.. ? Two goals just over a minute apart and both by Dartmouth freshmen propelled the women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over instate rival New Hampshire tonight at Burnham Field.
The Big Green improved to 2-6-0 while the Wildcats dropped to 4-4-1 with their third straight loss.
"We are delighted to get the win, create some more chances and keep a clean sheet. It was good to get the freshmen involved in scoring and overall I thought it was a pretty good performance," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "We really needed a win and some goals for confidence heading into Ivy play this weekend with Princeton."
Dartmouth started off with offensive intensity, taking several long distance shots that UNH goalkeeper Ally Yost was able to control.
The Green broke through when freshman forward Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her first collegiate goal, connecting with a header off a free kick from sophomore Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) from 30 yards out at 20:25.
The Big Green kept the pressure on from the restart, earning a corner kick right away. Sophomore Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) sent a nice ball into the box and Dartmouth got off two deflected shots before freshman Sarah Bromley (La Jolla, Calif.) hammered home her first collegiate goal at 21:38.
Dartmouth controlled the tempo for most of the remainder of the contest and went on to outshoot New Hampshire, 17-4 for the game. Junior goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) only had to make two saves, but cleared out two dangerous UNH corners in the second half and controlled the defense well.
Yost kept the Big Green at bay with eight saves in goal for the Wildcats.
Sophomore Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) was dynamic as always in midfield for the Big Green, making several big tackles defensively and setting up the offensive attack. Senior co-captain Monica Martin de Bustamante (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) made her first appearance of the season for Dartmouth since returning from injury. She nearly made it 3-0 late in the game with a beautiful header facing away from the goal but Yost made an equally impressive leaping save to spoil the senior striker's debut.
The Dartmouth women are back in action on Saturday when they host Princeton in their Ivy League opener at 7:00 p.m. at Burnham Field.
