HANOVER, N.H. ? Dartmouth men's basketball played like a team with revenge on its mind as they defeated Harvard 73-56 at Leede Arena on Friday night.
After last week's hard loss to Harvard, the Big Green was ready for a rematch with the Crimson at home, after a week spent focusing on morale and mental preparation.
Dartmouth started out strong, as junior Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio) scored the first points of the game. A jumper by junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) followed by a three-pointer by junior DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) gave Dartmouth an early lead.
Although Harvard battled back to tie the game up 9-9, the Crimson never pulled ahead, as the Big Green continued to drive up the score. By halftime, Dartmouth was leading by 10, with a score of 36-26. Throughout the second half, Dartmouth maintained its lead, but in the final minutes, the Big Green drove up the score to finish 17 points up on Harvard.
Head coach Terry Dunn was very pleased with how his team held Harvard down in the second half. “When the opponent has 26 points in the first half and only 30 in the second half, a gain of only four points, that's huge,” Dunn said, “We gave up 47 points in the first half last week. I think the numbers will speak for themselves.”
Senior Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) did his part to keep Harvard's numbers down. He pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, denying Harvard second chances at the net.
Offensively, DeVon Mosley and Alex Barnett took command of the ball, as Mosley sank 17 points, while Barnett poured in a game-high 21, including an especially crowd-pleasing dunk in the first half after receiving a cross-court pass from Ball.
All in all, Dartmouth's performance on the court was as a team possessed in comparison to the previous week, a loss that hit the Big Green particularly hard.
“I've never felt that way after a loss before,” said Mosley, “It provided me with that extra desire to go after loose balls.”
Dartmouth's drive to recover those balls played a large part in their win, as players took advantage of every Harvard fumble.
Barnett added, “Last week, I played well against Harvard, but we still lost, so I definitely was thinking heavily about this game today. I probably should have paid more attention in class, but the thought of this game was on my mind all day today.”
Snapping the Big Green's four game slide, the win puts Dartmouth's record at 6-8, going 4-1 at Leede Arena.
The Big Green men will travel to UNH on Monday, Jan. 14 to play the Wildcats, and will next play at home on Jan. 23 against University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Tip-off for both games is at 7 pm.
