HANOVER, N.H. ? The Dartmouth men's basketball team took on Columbia on Friday, Feb. 15, losing 59-50 in front of a home crowd in Leede Arena. The loss, just the second for Dartmouth at home, puts the Big Green at 8-13, and 1-6 in the Ivy League.
Junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) sank a team-high 14 points, followed closely by DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) with 13. Barnett also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
With freshman John Marciano (Roselle Park, N.J.) sidelined with a broken hand incurred at Yale, junior Kurt Graeber (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) joined the starting lineup this week.
A three-point shot from Mosley started things off for the Big Green, who held an early lead over the Lions. However, with the score set at 7-5, both teams hit a three-minute scoring drought. Shots were sent towards the basket on both sides, but all bounced away.
Once captain Michael Giovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah) got the ball rolling again for the Big Green with a jumper at 11:25, Dartmouth was able to maintain a slight lead for the next few minutes of play. However, with 8:53 left in the half, Columbia caught up to take the lead, 15-14. Going into halftime, Dartmouth was down by two, 26-24, as a long three-point shot from Mosley put the Big Green in striking distance for the second half.
Going into halftime, Mosley led Dartmouth with nine points, going 3-for-4 in shots from beyond the arc.
Dartmouth fought to keep up in the second half, but couldn't take control of the ball game, as Columbia maintained a small lead over the Big Green. With 12:20 left to play, a jumper from Alex Barnett put the Big Green ahead once again, 37-36 but it was short lived. Columbia again drew ahead by a slim margin, and Dartmouth could only hang on as the Lions pulled away to win, 59-50.
Columbia senior John Baumann was a dominant presence on the floor throughout the game, putting a game-high 25 points on the board overall. More than half of Baumann's points were taken from the foul line, where he went 13-for-13.
Tomorrow, Feb. 16, the Big Green will face Cornell, who are 7-0 in the Ivy League after their defeat tonight of Harvard. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
