HANOVER, N.H. ? Despite standout performances from several of its players, the Dartmouth men's basketball team fell 73-63 to Cornell on Saturday, Feb. 16.
In addition to junior Jarrett Mathis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman John Marciano (Roselle Park, N.J.) sidelined with injuries, the Big Green dressed neither freshman Matt Chisick (Carmel, N.Y.) nor junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) for the game against the Big Red. With Barnett, the Big Green's leading scorer, out of the game, it was left to the other Dartmouth players to step up and fill the gap.
And step up they did. Junior DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) put a game-high 18 points on the board for the Big Green. Mosley was followed closely by sophomore Elgin Fitzgerald, who poured in a career-high 17 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Captain Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) also had 13 points and six rebounds of his own.
In the end, though, the fine performances by Big Green players were not enough to notch a win for Dartmouth.
After shooting out to an early lead over Cornell to start the game, Dartmouth successfully held off the Big Red until a three-pointer from Cornell's Ryan Wittman gave the Big Red its first lead of the game, 20-18, with 9:18 left to play in the first half. Although Cornell worked to pull ahead, a buzzer-beating three-pointer by DeVon Mosley set the halftime score at 36-35. Although Cornell held the lead, it was still anyone's game.
Mosley repeated his three-point feat to start the second half off for the Big Green, and a jumper from captain Johnathan Ball tied the game up at 39. The game remained close, but the Big Green could never quite take the lead, and with ten minutes left to play, Cornell began to pull ahead.
The Big Red lead gradually increased to as much as 11 points, and Dartmouth was unable to close the gap as Cornell worked to run down the clock in the final minutes to win 73-63.
Dartmouth's loss drops them to 8-14, and 1-7 in the Ivy League. Cornell remains undefeated in the Ivies at 8-0.
The Big Green will be back in Leede Arena next week on Friday, Feb. 22 to take on Penn at 7:00 pm.
