Since starting preseason on August 21, the Dartmouth women's soccer team has been immersed in preparations for the highly-anticipated 2009 campaign.
The student-athletes have balanced a full slate of practices and conditioning sessions with a host of team-building activities. In addition, the sophomore class is in the midst of final exams for the summer session. Most days feature a morning and afternoon practice session with various other team meetings, meals and activities in the evenings. All the preparation is building towards the season-opening weekend, when Dartmouth hosts Maine on Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. and San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.
DartmouthSports.com caught up with the Big Green during annual photo day and a practice session, both of which are featured in the photo gallery.
Senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.), who took a medical redshirt during the 2007 season offered her thoughts on the experience:
"It feels so right to be back. This group has the feeling that it's going to be a good year. We have compartments [to preseason] - work really hard for three days then get some rest, work hard then have an intrasquad scrimmage. We try to keep it in sections to keep it interesting."
Classmate Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.), recently announced as a Lowe's Senior Class Award Candidate, noted:
"We're all really excited to be here and the chemistry feels just
right. There's a positive vibe to everyone and we're
thinking about Sept. 4 but in order to stay focused we're taking it one
day at a time."
Entering her fifth year at the helm, head coach Angie Hind returns eight starters to the fold including a trio of All-Ivy honorees in midfielders Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.), Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Sack all seniors. Quick and Sack will captain the Big Green along with Poskin who returns after leading the team with three game-winning goals in 2008. Sack, an NSCAA All-Northeast first teamer, led the Big Green in scoring with 11 points last season while Quick added 10.
Other returning offensive starters are juniors Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.), who blasted a team-high four goals last season, and Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.), who brings significant experience to the midfield core after playing in all 32 games her first two seasons, starting 24.
A solid core of returners in the backline is headlined by seniors Thea Sutton (San Rafael, Calif.) and Jenny Stone (Wilmette, Calif.) who have been starters during their careers. A pair of dynamic defenders in junior Melisa Krjnaic (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) return from the 2008 starting lineup as well.
Dartmouth's diverse squad includes six players in each of the four classes with 24 athletes hailing from 13 different states, Washington, D.C. and Canada.
