Cambridge, Mass. - The Dartmouth lightweight crew started its spring season against Penn and MIT, with the varsity picking up wins over both.
It marked the first EARC race at Dartmouth for head coach
Dan Roock, in his first season at Dartmouth, though he has more than 20 years experience in Ivy League rowing. Roock's varsity eight (2-0, 1-0 Ivy) finished the 2000 m course in 6:22.4 ahead of Penn in 6:24.5 and MIT in 6:30.4.
There was a small 5-7 mph headwind and calm conditions overall.
Dartmouth was also victorious in the freshman four, in which the Green's A boat won in 7:51.2 ahead of the B boat in 7:57.3 and MIT in 8:05.2.
Dartmouth's second varsity eight was edged by Penn, which won in 6:29.5 ahead of the Big Green's time of 6:31.1 The freshman eight took second in a thrilling finish, just 0.2 seconds ahead of Penn in a time of 6:42.7. MIT won that race in 6:38.2.
The Big Green is back on the water next Saturday, April 10 when it heads to Derby, Conn. to race Delaware and St. Joseph's.
