Complete Game Notes
Ivy Opener a Tough Assignment
• In the midst of a five-game skid and having lost nine of its last 10 games, Dartmouth enters Ivy League play at the preseason favorite, nationally ranked Harvard.
• In four of the five recent losses, the Big Green have either been tied or held the lead for a total of 107:59 minutes, or 65.4 percent of the time.
• Against the Bison, Dartmouth owned the lead for 30 consecutive minutes until faltering in the final six-and-a-half minutes.
• Freshman Gabas Maldunas recorded his third double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds versus Bucknell, equaling the number of double-doubles the entire Big Green squad had last season.
• Senior Jabari Trotter scored in double figures for the fifth straight contest with 10 points on Tuesday, all coming in the first half.
• Joining Maldunas and Trotter with at least 10 points was sophomore Tyler Melville for the first time this year, tallying a dozen, including the final 10 points of the game for the Big Green.
• Dartmouth has held the lead at halftime six times this season (by an average of more than six points), but has failed to hold the lead five times.
• Dartmouth has become quite a sharp-shooting team of late, canning 37-of-80 (.463) from three-point range over the last four contests.
Series vs. Harvard
• While Dartmouth has a comfortable 94-78 advantage all-time against the Crimson, but Harvard has won the last four encounters.
• At Lavietes Pavilion, the Big Green have an 11-18 mark, but their last win in the series came at this venue, a 75-66 overtime thriller on Jan. 24, 2009.
• Paul Cormier is 12-7 against Harvard in his career, which includes three wins while at Fairfield.
• While Dartmouth dominated the first 60 years of the series with a 56-14 record through 1960, the the Big Green have mustered just a 38-64 mark since then, including a 5-18 record since 2000.
Scouting the Crimson
• Harvard is ranked in both polls (Associated Press and ESPN Coaches) at 22 and 21, respectively, but that may change next week after losing at Fordham on Tuesday, 60-54.
• One of the most impressive aspects of the Crimson's 12-2 record is that Harvard has played just four times at home, winning each time.
• Not surprisingly, the Crimson are overwhelming favorites to win the Ivy League title a year after earning their first conference crown, which they shared with Princeton.
• Harvard is one of the stingiest defensive teams in the country, allowing just 55.4 points per game, and its scoring margin ranks among the top 50 nationally (+10.6).
• The top two scorers are forwards Kyle Casey (11.6 ppg) and Keith Wright (10.9), both of whom shoot better than 53 percent from the floor.
• While Casey is an occasional three-point threat, Laurent Rivard is one of the best shooters in the league with 32 threes at a 41.0 percent clip.
• Brandyn Curry runs the offense, averaging nearly five assists per outing, and he is a pest on defense with 34 steals.
• Tommy Amaker is in his fifth season as head coach at Harvard with a 78-53 record, plus is 254-192 in his career with stops at Seton Hall and Michigan.
Ivy Opener
This is the 25th straight season in which Dartmouth opens conference play against the Harvard Crimson. The Big Green have gone 10-14 in those 24 games but have dropped the last five. The last victory in an Ivy opener for Dartmouth came on Jan. 6, 2006 in Leede Arena in overtime, 80-73.
Shooters Gaining Confidence
Before a three-game road trip in New York, Dartmouth was shooting just 31.0 percent on its three-point attempts. That figure did not improve after hitting 7-of-25 at Colgate, but since then the Big Green have drilled 37-of-80 (.463) from downtown to move up over 100 spots in the national rankings into the top 40 percent. Dartmouth hit 12 three-pointers in each of the first two games during the stretch, a total it had not reached but once in the previous 227 games.
Maldunas Dub-Dub Not Enough
Freshman Gabas Maldunas posted his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards against Bucknell on Jan. 3. Like his other double-doubles (15 and 10 vs. Bryant, 17 and 10 vs. Elon), it came at Leede Arena. But this one was unlike the others as well as it came in a losing effort, despite the Big Green holding the lead for 30 consecutive minutes. His three double-doubles equal the total the Big Green players amassed during the entire 2010-11 season.
Melville Mayhem
Sophomore Tyler Melville, whose playing time has diminished after a solid rookie campaign, got the opportunity to provide a spark against Bucknell in the last few minutes as the Bison were putting on a run. The guard ended a 15-0 Bucknell run with a jumper, then scored the next eight Dartmouth points as well. He finished the game with a season-high 12 points in just 14 minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bison in the 67-59 loss.
Trotter Approaches a Run
At Albany on Dec. 23, senior Jabari Trotter rarely missed when he lined up a shot, connecting on 8-of-10 from the floor and a sizzling 5-of-6 from downtown for a season-high 22 points. It was just the second 20-point game by any Big Green player this season, joining R.J. Griffin who had 29 against Bryant. And in each of his last five games, he has contributed at least 10 points after reaching double figures just once in the first 10 contests.
Modest Milestones
Both senior Jabari Trotter and junior R.J. Griffin reached a round number in the loss to Holy Cross as Trotter surpassed 700 career points while Griffin made it to 500. Trotter enters this game with 712 points to his name, and Griffin has 504, but the active leader is senior David Rufful with 747 points. The Big Green have not had a 1,000-points scorer since Alex Barnett '09 tallied 1,374 in his stellar career.
