HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Corey Delaney scored twice and senior keeper Tatiana Saunders had three saves as the Dartmouth women's soccer team upset Ivy League leader Harvard, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Burnham Field.
With the triumph, the Big Green move to within one point of Harvard (13) with one game remaining in league play next week to decide the 2014 Ivy League Champion. Dartmouth is 7-4-4 overall and will travel to Cornell to meet the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Harvard will host Columbia in Cambridge at 1:30 p.m.
“This was the best defensive effort I have seen from us this season,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “We were extremely focused and frustrated Harvard at times. We had good chances throughout the game and held possession for the majority of the 90 minutes.”
Delaney got the Big Green on the board in the 17th minute as classmate Jackie Friedman sent a long through ball that bounced in front of Harvard keeper Cheta Emba, but the goalie misjudged the hop, allowing Delaney to pocket the ball into the empty net. Harvard outshot the Big Green in the first 45 minutes, 7-4, but Dartmouth held possession for a good amount of time. Saunders made all three saves in the first frame, as did her counterpart Emba.
The Big Green settled down the play in the final stanza, but not before Delaney cashed in on her second tally of the night off a pass by freshman Lindsay Knutson in the 50th minute. Knutson was the recipient of a Harvard turnover and then sent a through ball to Delaney who dribbled around a defender before blasting a shot to the far right post.
Prior to the game, Dartmouth and head coach Ron Rainey honored the five graduating members of the Class of 2015 – Kate Castillo, Kendall Kraus, Tatiana Saunders, Laura Thurber and Tasha Wilkins.
