LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Meredith Gurnee headed in a free kick in overtime to give the Dartmouth women's soccer team a 2-1 (OT), win over UMass Lowell on Tuesday night.
Dartmouth (8-4-4) will play its final game of the season on Saturday at Cornell at 2:30 p.m. The Big Green will capture the Ivy League title with a win combined with either a Harvard loss or tie at Columbia.
“We played better as a team played in the second half,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “Credit to both Kate and Meredith with nice blue collar goals. We are looking forward to Cornell on Saturday.”
Senior Kate Castillo scored the first goal of the game for the Big Green in the 55th minute on a cross by junior Lucielle Kozlov. Junior Corey Delaney set up Castillo's goal off a corner kick. The River Hawks tied the game in the 87th minute off a rebound goal by Haley Benson after senior keeper Tatiana Saunders (5 saves) made save on Emily Bracken's original shot.
In overtime, senior Kendall Kraus had a chance to end the game in the opening seconds, but her shot went high of the net. The Big Green kept the ball in the zone and were awarded a free kick by junior Jill Dayneka from 35 yards away that led to the game-winner by Gurnee at the 2:17 mark of extra time.
The hosts finished the game with a 14-8 edge in shots, but the Big Green were the only team to capitalize in the extra frame with two shots. UML keeper Jill Carlson made two saves in the final 47:17 after she replaced Jane Hatzikonstantis, who played the first half.
