BURLINGTON, VT. — Vermont finished with four players in double figures and held on late in the second half to defeat the Dartmouth women's basketball team, 68-63, on Sunday afternoon at Patrick Gym.
Sophomore Fanni Szabo led all scorers with 25 points. Juniors Lakin Roland and Daisy Jordan also finished in double figures with 14 and 12 points each.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 5-2 on the season. Vermont is now 1-7 overall and will host Wagner next Sunday.
Sydney Smith finished with a Vermont high of 23 points. Emilie Cloutier had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Off the bench, Kayla Burchll contributed 10 points. The Catamounts shot 41 percent and got to the line 23 times with 17 points from the stripe.
On the Big Green end, the team shot 36 percent from the field and made 12 free throws. Dartmouth outrebounded Vermont, 40-39.
In the second, Dartmouth took a one-point lead, 40-39, on a three-pointer by Szabo with 16:01 left. Freshman Kate Letkewicz added five points in the second stanza while tying the game, 42-42, with a turn-around jumper at 14:47 and then nailed a triple a few minutes later to cut the deficit at 47-45. Vermont regained the lead with 5:49 to go on a jumper by Jordan Eisler. Szabo had a chance to tie the game a minute later, but only connected on the second free throw. Vermont scored on the next possession to take a three-point lead, 62-59.
With less than a minute remaining, Jordan netted both free throws to make it a 64-63 contest, but a Dartmouth foul and four consecutive free throws by the Catamounts sealed the game.
In the first, Vermont took an early 4-0 lead before Roland scored off the glass at 18:18. The Catamounts picked up a 12-8 advantage on a pair from the line by Kylie Butler. Two minutes later and a 10-0 run by the hosts put them up, 22-10, with 9:10 left. Dartmouth battled back and cut the deficit after a 10-4 run made it 28-26 with 4:16 remaining. Vermont held a 34-30 at the break, the Catamounts shot 42 percent from the floor. Szabo led the Big Green with 10 points on 5-of-9 from the field. Sydney Smith scored a half-best 13 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
Dartmouth continues its four-game road swing at Maine on Wednesday, followed by Northern Iowa next Saturday.
