GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team continues to challenge itself with one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season. The latest contest in 2014 saw the Big Green fall at No. 4 Florida, 14-7, Tuesday evening at Dizney Stadium.
Dartmouth drops to 3-3 overall this season with the loss, while the Gators continue their strong 2014 campaign, improving to 9-2.
“I was really pleased with how we played. They (Florida) are a really good team and I thought we played them very tough,” head coach Amy Patton said. “If we get a couple of breaks to go our way, it could have been a whole different game.
“Kristen (Giovanniello) was really good in goal for us tonight and we worked on some different things attack wise as well. At this point, we are still looking for our best mix up front and tonight Ingrid (Hermanson) stepped up and really came through when she was called upon,” Patton continued.
Entering the contest with the Gators, sophomore Ingrid Hermanson had appeared in just three career games in her time in Hanover without registering a point. That changed on this cool spring night in central Florida as the Mountain Lakes, N.J., native scored three goals, tops among Big Green players.
The nation's leading goal scorer, Shannon Gilroy, added to her impressive season total, scoring six times and now has 49 in 11 games.
The biggest performance of the night, however, did not belong to an offensive player from either team. Senior goalkeeper Kristen Giovanniello turned aside 15 shots, the second-best single-game total in her stellar Dartmouth career.
Florida has proven itself to be one of the top scoring teams in the nation the last few years, led by high-caliber players like Gilroy, and were once again potent on this night, attempting 40 shots to Dartmouth's 15.
Giovanniello moved into third-place all-time in career saves in program history as she now has 458 in her 58 games in a Big Green uniform. With her eighth save of the night, the Old Brookville, N.Y., native passed Julie Wadland '10 (450) on the all-time list.
At the other end of the field, all three of Hermanson's goals came in the second half as the Green hung with the fourth-ranked Gators until the final buzzer sounded. The sophomore came off the bench and was the recipient of three well placed passes from senior Liz Calby for each of her goals.
Calby finished the game with four points as she netted her 11th tally of the season in addition to her trio of assists. Sarah Byrne and Samantha Schiff also had a goal in the game, while sophomore Jaclyn Leto finished with a marker and an assist for two points.
The reason for Florida's high number of shots was its 17-6 advantage in draw controls, forcing the Green and White to play defense for long stretches. However, Dartmouth was able to capitalize on its chances when presented, scoring on 50 percent of its shots on goal (6-12) in the game.
The Big Green return home to host Columbia Saturday at noon in just their second Ivy League game of the season. For Patton, the contest marks the 350th in her coaching career, all at Dartmouth.
