HANOVER, N.H. — Harvard erased 14-point second-half deficit and took its first lead with 1:01 remaining in the contest as the Crimson stunned the Dartmouth women's basketball team, 75-69, on Saturday evening at Leede Arena.
The defeat drops the Big Green to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in Ivy League play. Harvard is now 8-8 overall and 1-1 in league play. Both squads will host Princeton and Penn next weekend at home.
Sophomore Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 25 points on 10-of-24 from the field. Junior Lakin Roland added 12 points. Dartmouth shot 40 percent from the field and outrebounded the Crimson, 38-32.
Dartmouth raced out to a quick 8-0 lead over the Crimson, as freshman Amber Mixon completed an old-fashion three-point play after Jordan won the opening tip. Mixon gave the Big Green a 10-point lead with a pair from the line to push the advantage at 12-2. The Big Green held a lead the rest of the half and went into the locker room ahead, 39-26.
The Green and White held its double-digit lead until a five-point play changed the momentum. With 5:51 remaining, Harvard's Shilpa Tummala hit an uncontested three-pointer, but an off the ball foul was called during the act of the shot. The ruling was a made basket and a pair of free throws to Harvard's Temi Fagbenle, who sunk both shots.
Szabo increased the lead back to nine (64-55) for the Big Green with a layup, but a jumper by AnnMarie Healy and a three by Ali Curtis dropped the lead to four with 3:53 left.
Holding a four-point lead, Roland lined up a long-range basket to push the lead back to seven points (67-60). Harvard answered back with a 10-0 run and took a three-point lead after Curtis knocked down a pair at the line. During the run, Tummala made a free throw after she held back on a breakaway to draw contact and then nailed a trey to give the Crimson their first lead. Fagbenle made it a five-point cushion for the visitors with two more free throws.
Harvard finished with all five starters in double figures, led by Healy with 17 points. Fagbenle was the lone player on the score sheet with a double-double (14 pts. and 13 reb.). Erin McDonnell, Tummala and Curtis all finished with 11 points.
The Crimson shot 49 percent from the field, 56 percent from the outside and made 18 free throws.
Dartmouth hosts the Penn Quakers on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Princeton on Saturday at 6 p.m.
