HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's rugby team fell, 14-7, to Norwich in the quarterfinals of the inaugural National Collegiate Women's Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) 15s Tournament Saturday morning at Brophy Field.
The Big Green see their first varsity 15s season come to a close with a 7-2 overall record with the loss. The Cadets move on the to the NCWVRA semifinals next weekend at Brown and will play top-seeded Quinnipiac.
“We obviously didn't get the result we wanted today,” head coach Katie Dowty said. “When we played together we controlled the flow of play, but Norwich capitalized on a couple of lapses.
“As frustrating as it is to lose a match we feel we could have won, it's great fuel for the fire next season,” Dowty added. “We've grown so much over the past 10 weeks and had an amazing first season as a varsity program. If we can continue growing at this rate, we know we can compete with anyone.”
Norwich scored twice in the first half on tries from Frankie Sands and Ally Day in a two-minute span three-quarters of the way through the frame. Two successful conversions by Alanna Girardin and Sheila Decker made it 14-0 in favor of the home team at the break.
The scored remained that way until the 81st minute of play when flanker Erika Cabrera bulled her way through the crowd for the touch and the first five points of the game for the home team.
Camille Johnson capped the scoring with a successful conversion, but with the time remaining it was not enough as the Cadets held on for the seven-point win.
