PHILADELPHIA — Senior Tia Dawson receded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but the Dartmouth women's basketball team was unable to hold off a strong Penn squad and fell 63-46 on Saturday evening at the Palestra.
The offensive achievement for the senior was eighth and her first since she had 10 points and 11 rebounds at Yale on Feb. 2, 2013. The deficit drops Dartmouth to 11-13 overall and 2-8 in the Ivy League. Penn improves to 16-7 on the season and 7-2 in league play.
Sophomore Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 14 points and junior Lakin Roland added 10 rebounds and six points. Dartmouth finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field and only got to the line three times and made two. The Big Green finished with an advantage in the rebounding column, 40-27, and had 19 on the offensive end.
Renee Busch had a game-high 17 points for the Quakers whose balanced offense saw 10 players score and six had at least five points. Penn shot 43 percent from the field and made nine three-pointers and 12 free throws. Penn capitalized on Dartmouth turnovers (18) with 25 points in transition. The Quakers added 31 bench points with Busch netting the majority.
Dawson opened the game with a layup after winning the tip. The game teetered for the first seven minutes with four ties and five lead changes. The Big Green held a lead for 3:28 until Penn took a lead off a jumper by Kara Bonenberger at 17:08. The Big Green retook the early lead on a layup by Szabo at 16:07, but a triple by Renne Busch gave Penn a 12-10 advantage. On the next possession, Szabo drilled a trey of her own to give Dartmouth its final lead of the game, 13-12.
Since that mark, Penn went on a 13-2 run and took a 26-15 lead with 6:08 left. After Penn took the 11-point lead, Dartmouth received some great rebounding on the offensive glass that led to a three by freshman Andi Norman that cut the deficit to eight (26-18). Penn took a 14-point lead with 2:52 left on a three-pointer by Anna Ross.
Dartmouth narrowed the deficit at the break, 35-27, and was led by Dawson with eight points and five rebounds. The Big Green shot 40 percent while Penn topped at 52 percent. The visitors held an 18-13 edge on the glass and secured nine offensive caroms Busch paced Penn with 11 points in 10 minutes off the bench.
In the second half, Dawson and Szabo scored back-to-back to decrease the Quaker lead to four (35-31). The Quakers raced out and then regained a double-digit lead with consecutive three-pointers from Michelle Nwokedi and Busch. Penn pushed the lead back to the high teens and got to the line late in the contest and pulled away with the 17-point victory.
Dartmouth will conclude the home schedule next weekend when Cornell and Columbia head to Hanover. Friday's contest against the Big Red is set for 7 pm. And Saturday is at 6 p.m. Prior to the game on Saturday, the Big Green will honor their three seniors. The game is also scheduled as the annual pink game.
