HANOVER, N.H. – Senior Tia Dawson finished with a double-double – 13 points and 10 rebounds — to lead the Dartmouth women's basketball team over Columbia, 60-50, on Friday evening at Leede Arena.
Dartmouth (12-13, 3-8 Ivy) snapped a five-game home winless streak with a solid defensive performance and held the Ivy League's second-leading scorer Tori Oliver to just nine points after the Columbia sophomore went 0-for-10 from the field for nearly 35 minutes. Five of her nine points came from the line.
Dartmouth forced 15 turnovers, had nine steals and rejected five shots. Senior Milica Toskovic was responsible for three of the five blocks and was tremendous guarding Oliver.
The team shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor and connected on 12-of-16 from the line for 75 percent. The Big Green secured 37 rebounds which were one better than the Lions.
Sophomore Fanni Szabo led all scorers with 19 points and contributed six rebounds with a team-best four assists in 40 minutes. Freshman Kate Letkewicz tied her season-high with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Camille Zimmerman led Columbia (8-17, 2-9 Ivy) with 13 points and the Lions shot 34.5 percent from the field.
Dartmouth scored half of its points in the paint and got a 16-point contribution from the bench. The Big Green led by as many as 12 early in the second half, but Columbia battled back and cut the deficit to as little as six (52-46) with 2:52 remaining.
Columbia scored the opening basket and led for 23 seconds before Dartmouth took over and led the rest of the way. The hosts took a 10-4 lead on a trey by Szabo with 14:16 left. The lead increased to double figures (22-11) 10 minutes later on a jumper by Letkewicz with 5:46 left to play.
Dartmouth held the advantage into the locker room and led 28-18 after 20 minutes. Szabo's eight points led the way and Dartmouth shot 39 percent from the floor. The Big Green defense held the Lions to just 25 percent overall and 1-of-8 from the outside.
In the second half, Dartmouth once again did a good job on all ends of the court after an offensive surge by the Lions dropped the Big Green's lead to seven (32-25) four minutes into the frame.
Dawson dropped 10 points in the second half and was played a major defensive role in the paint. Zimmerman led the Lions with 11 points in the second.
Dartmouth will conclude the home schedule on Saturday evening against Cornell at 6 p.m.
