SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Dartmouth dropped its fourth game by one run in a 3-2 loss against UT Arlington in a game played at UC Santa Barbara, then the 16th-ranked Gauchos handed the Big Green a 10-1 defeat on Sunday. With the two losses, the Big Green (1-14) lost their eighth straight game, all on this trip to California.
The Mavericks (12-9) managed just one run off of sophomore right-hander Jackson Bubala, making his collegiate debut on the mound, over six innings and trailed Dartmouth, 2-1, when they came to bat in the seventh against reliever Chris Burkholder (0-3). The inning started ominously as Christian Hollie, and the next two UCSB batters sacrificed him to third. It took a single off the bat of Travis Sibley — his third hit of the game — to tie the score, and after he swiped second, Levi Scott doubled him home for the lead.
Daniel James (1-1), who tossed three scoreless innings of relief, finished his day by completing the eighth inning, and Colin Torberg came on to provide a perfect ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Dartmouth had jumped out to an early lead against Joel Kuhnel when junior Joe Purritano smacked his first of two doubles to bring home senior Matt Parisi, who had led off the contest with a single.
Bubala surrendered his only run in the third as Matt MacLean drew a one-out walk, took third on a Sibley hit-and-run single and scored on Scott's fly to center, tying the game at one.
Sophomore Michael Ketchmark put the Big Green back on top in the fourth with a two-out, solo homer to left, the first of his career. Dartmouth had a chance to add more in the sixth after loading the bases with one out, but James induced a double play to escape unscathed.
Parisi was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Purritano and Ketchmark each had two knocks in support of Bubala, who yielded just four hits and two walks while striking out two in his six stanzas.
In the Big Green's second game of the day, they could muster just an unearned run against three pitchers for UC Santa Barbara (16-6). Shane Bieber (4-2) hurled 7.2 innings and surrendered that run on just four hits without walking a batter and striking out five
The Gaucho bats produced 13 hits and roughed up freshman Sam Fichthorn (0-1), who was making his first collegiate start, for seven runs on 10 hits in six innings. Dalton Kelly reached base three times and crossed the plate each time he did, while Peter Maris, Campbell Wear and J.D. Hearn all drove in a pair of runs.
Hearn had his first RBI in the second with a single to give UCSB a 1-0 lead, and in the third, Robby Nesovic drove in one run with a double before Kelly tripled him home.
The lone Dartmouth run came in the fifth with some help from Bieber, who threw wildly to first in an attempt to pick of senior Nick Lombardi, who had singled. He scooted over to third, then came home on Ketchmark's grounder to short, to make it a 3-1 game.
The Gauchos answered back with three in their half, capped by Wear's two-run four-bagger to left-center, his first of the year. Cameron Newell slashed an RBI triple in the sixth, and UCSB tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth on two singles, two wild pitches and three hit batters.
Junior Nick Ruppert had two of the Big Green's five hits, all of which were singles.
Dartmouth finishes its nine-game trip in California when it plays at Cal Poly (7-13) on Monday at 6 p.m. (PDT).
Notes: The eight-game losing streak is the longest for the Big Green since the first eight games of the 2009 season. That team went on to win the Ivy League and play an NCAA Regional … Purritano has a team-best nine doubles on the season in just 15 games.
