HANOVER, N.H. – After scoring just one goal in the first quarter, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse turned up the aggression to defeat UMass Lowell, 18-9, during the teams' first-ever meeting on Scully-Fahey Field on a chilly Tuesday evening.
The Big Green improved to 5-7 overall, while the River Hawks wrapped up their first season as a Division I program with a record of 1-12.
Senior Phil Hession led the team with one goal and four assists for five points, while also breaking his own single-game record in face-offs, going 22-for-25 at the X, and ground balls, grabbing 19. Senior Adam Fishman had four points from three goals and one assist and freshman Jack Korzelius had two markers to go with two assists.
The first quarter was relatively quiet, as just two goals were scored during the opening 15 minutes. UMass Lowell got on the board first with a Martin Winter marker with 12:51 to play and the River Hawks remained one ahead until the end of the quarter.
With nine seconds remaining in the first and just one tick left with the extra player, junior Cam Lee scored his seventh of the season to tie the score at one going into the second.
Dartmouth's first lead of the game came just over 10 seconds into the second quarter, when senior Adam Fishman found the back of the net for the 21st time this season. From there, the Big Green took that lead and ran with it, outscoring the River Hawks, 6-1, with goals by freshman Cody George, Korzelius, senior Adam Hull and Fishman, keeping the opponents scoreless for over 20 minutes to end the second with an 8-2 edge.
UMass Lowell found its stride in the third quarter, scoring five times and holding the home team to three goals to make it much closer game. After trading points back and forth, the two teams entered the final 15 minutes with the Green and White leading, 11-7.
It was Dartmouth that found its groove in the fourth, scoring five times off goals by senior Jake Weil, junior KC Beard, Fishman and junior Austin Duncan before allowing another UMass Lowell goal, a marker scored by Sean Tyrell with 8:23 to play, making the score 15-8. George scored twice more, bringing his season total to four, while fellow freshman Cormac Dugan netted his first collegiate goal with 1:17 remaining to end the evening.
The Green outshot the River Hawks, 41-34. Dartmouth went 27-for-31 in face-offs and went 4-for-6 with the extra man, while holding the visitors to 1-for-5. Junior Blair Friedensohn earned the win with 13 stops and Alex Desmarais had eight saves while being tagged with the loss.
Dartmouth's final game of the regular season will take place on Saturday, April 25, when it hosts No. 11 Brown at 1 p.m. The Green will honor their eight seniors, who will be playing at Scully-Fahey Field for the last time.
