POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior co-captains Lucielle Kozlov and Corey Delaney opened their final season at Dartmouth by scoring a goal each against Marist, leading the Dartmouth women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
This is just the second time in program history that the two teams have met.
The Green are now 1-0 on the young season, while the Red Foxes dipped to 1-2 following a win against Lehigh and a loss to Providence last week.
“This was a good start to the season,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “The team competed well over the 90 minutes and, while there are areas we have to clean up, it was nice to get good reps that led to a shut out and a couple of goals.”
During the first 20 minutes of action, Dartmouth maintained control of the ball, outshooting Marist, 8-1. At 20:38, a shot by junior Holly Patterson hit the post and rebounded to Delaney, who sent the ball wide of the cage.
At 23:23, sophomore Melanie Vangel won the ball and slotted it through the back line to Kozlov, who was composed in her finish from 12 yards out, putting the visitors up by one.
In net for the Green, sophomore Katie Fuhs did not have her first touch until the 29th minute of action when she stopped a shot sent by Erica Crosier. In the final minutes of the first half, Marist tried its hand at tying the game up by taking three straight shots, but two by Amanda Gerrity were blocked and one was stopped by Fuhs, allowing Dartmouth to enter the second half with a slight edge.
The Big Green attempted to increase their lead to two at 57:07, but Delaney's shot was just off mark and hit the crossbar. Following two corner kicks, Delaney received a cross from freshman Lauren Lucas and hammered the ball home from inside the box with less than eight minutes remaining on the clock, giving Dartmouth a comfortable two-goal advantage with time quickly winding down.
Both teams would take just one more shot apiece, with each team's goalkeeper making the save.
Dartmouth outshot Marist, 16-9. Marist's Ashley Houghton was kept busy in net, making back-to-back saves within the first two minutes of the game and ending the day with six saves. On the other side of the field, Fuhs proved to be a tough adversary, having to make just three stops throughout the entire 90 minutes.
This game against the Red Foxes was the first of four consecutive road games that the Big Green will play to open the fall. Next up, Dartmouth will travel to Tennessee to face Vanderbilt on Friday, Sept. 4 before heading to Memphis two days later to play the Tigers.
