HAMDEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's rugby team dropped its first road game of the 2015 season Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac, 43-5. The Big Green fell to 1-1 this fall, while the Bobcats improved to 2-1.
Despite the lopsided score, head coach Katie Dowty said that she was proud of the team's effort.
“The physicality and commitment to our defense was outstanding," she said. "We dominated possession and territory the entire first half. Now we know what we are capable of and the lessons we learned in the second half will be great motivators for the rest of our season.”
Sophomore flanker Lilie Zhang was the first player to tally points during the noon match up, while freshman scrumhalf Kat Ramage narrowly missed the conversion from the corner.
The Bobcats answered with a line break midway through the first half, notching seven points before fielding a kick from their own back line to cap off their first half lead, 14-7. Zhang was the closest the Big Green would come to scoring another try in the first half, finding the try line but being held up in the try zone.
After an incredibly tight first half, the Bobcats, a fall Division I final four team in 2014, began to pull away early in the second, taking advantage of a smaller field than the Green is used to practicing on by crashing through with the forwards on several pick and go's.
While Quinnipiac generally got the better of Dartmouth in the lineouts, it was the Big Green pack that dominated the scrums, coming in tight and together with the new addition of junior Audrey Perez in the front row.
Freshmen Milla Anderson (lock) and Alex Stendahl (fullback) and junior Kendall Ronzano (wing) took their first starts of the season, with Anderson and Stendahl, both walk-ons, going the full 80 minutes on the pitch.
Dartmouth will host its next three games. First up, the Green will take on the Brown Bears at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3.
