BURLINGTON, Vt. – A goal late in the second period proved to be the difference Friday night as Vermont defeated the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 1-0, at Gutterson Field House.
The game was played in stark contrast to the man who was honored in a pre-game ceremony. The Catamounts' all-time leading scorer Martin St. Louis saw his No. 8 raised to the rafters, becoming the first player in UVM (9-12-2) history to receive the honor.
Charles Grant was solid between the pipes, allowing just the Brendan Bradley goal at 18:52 of the second, while making 24 saves. Packey Munson earned the shutout with 39 saves, including 17 in the final period.
Dartmouth's (5-8-1) leading scorer and top-line center Nick Bligh — the NCAA's Third Star of the Week and MVP of the Ledyard Classic — was lost for the game with an injury on his first shift of the first period, changing the Big Green's offensive presence.
“We lost Nick (Bligh) in the first period, on his first shift,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 said after the game. “I was proud of the way we handled that and made adjustments to our lineup so early.
“We played well all night,” Gaudet added. “This was a good college hockey game between two teams who battled one another from start to finish. I wish we came out on top, though.”
Grant has now allowed just two goals in the last three games following Friday's one-goal loss.
The pre-game ceremony honoring St. Louis pushed back puck drop by 30 minutes, but was a classy celebration of one of college hockey's best all-time players.
“Vermont did a great job with the ceremony,” Gaudet added. I wanted our guys out there on the bench as a sign of respect to Marty, Vermont and their program. He (St. Louis) is a great ambassador for our game at the college level as well as professional and international play.”
Dartmouth finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play, while the home team was 0-for-2. The visitors outshot the home team, 39-25.
The Big Green are back in action at home on Sunday afternoon as they host Holy Cross at Thompson Arena at 4 p.m.
