HANOVER, N.H. – Behind goals from Matt Danilack and Matt Greer, the Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated Yale, 2-0, at Burnham Field on Saturday night.
The victory improves the Big Green to 3-2-5, 1-0-1 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-4-2, 0-1-1 in conference play.
Dartmouth controlled the pace of play nearly the entire 90 minutes, outshooting its opponent 10-6. In goal, James Hickok needed to make just four saves to preserve his second consecutive shutout of the season.
“I think every win is important,” Big Green head coach Chad Riley said. “We knew Yale was going to be tough and organized. They played a challenging schedule and credit to them. They've turned into a strong team and program. I think overall being at home comes with some added pressure and I think the guys responded well to that. They played with good intensity and control for the most part. I think Yale limited our chances, but I think we created enough to win.”
The contest proved to be a physical one, as the team's combined for 18 fouls total. About 15 minutes in, Dartmouth had a chance after Noah Paravicini was taken down on a play, but could not find the back of the net. With 17 minutes to play in the half, Justin Donawa sent a decent shot into the box that was nearly headed in.
The Big Green broke the scoreless tie with Danilack's second goal of the season, when he fired a shot from the top of the box that nestled into the upper right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
After the halftime break, Dartmouth came out looking for more when Donawa missed on a chance that went just wide in the 51st minute. Just 10 minutes later, the Big Green got the insurance goal when Matt Greer netted his second tally of the year on a low shot to the back left corner of the goal from 10 yards away.
Dartmouth's defense faced some pressure from Yale in the game's final 29 minutes, but did not falter. With five minutes to play in the contest, Donawa received two yellow cards which led to a red card and his ejection. The Big Green remained composed and were able to close out the match for the all important conference victory.
“One of the things I love about our league is that every weekend is a big weekend,” Riley said. “You like to go into a week of training with a win, because it puts a little more bounce in your step.”
Dartmouth returns to Burnham Field next Saturday to host Penn at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
