GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season Saturday afternoon at No. 3 Florida, 16-6.
The Big Green had won their first two games of 2016 before falling at Dizney Stadium to the third-ranked Gators, who are now 4-0 this season.
“Looking just at the stats, this game was more even than it ended up being on the scoreboard,” head coach Amy Patton said. “We didn't convert on the chances we got and didn't execute our game plan. The bottom line is we're disappointed in ourselves because we thought we could've given Florida a game and we didn't play the way we thought could.
“We have five or six freshmen on the field and sometimes that inexperience is what costs us,” Patton continued. “But I also think we also learn a lot about our team and see who is going to step up in pressure situations for us. As coaches, we were able to get a better picture of that today.”
Senior Jaclyn Leto led the Green with a pair of goals in the game, while Sophie Davidson matched her two points with a tally and an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Wahle reached double digits in saves for the first time in her career, stopping 10 in the loss. Florida split time in between starter Mary-Sean Wilcox, Haley Hicklen and Oliva Cole at the other end of the field with Wilcox and Hicklen recording three stops apiece.
For the home team, three players notched hat tricks in the win as Sammi Burgess, Nicole Graziano and Mollie Stevens all had a trio of goals.
Florida built a 10-3 lead by halftime despite an overwhelming 24-15 edge in fouls against. Dartmouth battled back in the second half, holding the high-powered Gators' attack to just six goals, while causing seven turnovers.
Taryn Deck, Courtney Weisse and Elizabeth Mastrio added the other three Big Green goals in the contest. Mastrio also had a game-high five draw controls with Larson Bennett adding three and Leto two as Dartmouth held a 12-11 edge in draws.
Wahle's five ground balls were also a game high with Lauren Maiorano, Danielle Lisovicz and Lauren D'Amico each picking up three.
Dartmouth is back home on Tuesday afternoon to take on Boston University. The Big Green and Terriers are set to play at 3 p.m. inside Scully-Fahey Field.
