HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's lacrosse senior Jaclyn Leto had a career day in a 15-13 win Tuesday against Boston University at Scully-Fahey Field.
Leto scored eight goals, the most by a Big Green player since Jacque Weitzel also scored eight in a win against Harvard on April 19, 2000.
Dartmouth improves to 3-1 this season by winning the back-and-forth contest, while the loss drops the Terriers to 1-3.
“We knew this was going to be a good team we played today,” head coach Amy Patton said. “I was proud of our team. The things we did poorly against Florida, we seemed to fix today and I love that progress going into our first Ivy League game on Saturday.”
In a high-scoring affair in which neither team managed more than a two-goal advantage for the first 47 minutes of play, it was Leto who stood out.
The Chatham, New Jersey, native scored three times in the first half and added five more in the second for just the seventh eight-or-more-goal game in the program's 44 seasons and the first in nearly 16 years.
“We were unable to get the attack moving the way we wanted to in our last game,” Leto said. “Today, I was more aware of our cohesiveness and how well we were attacking with assisted goals than I was of how many I was scoring.
“Once I get one, I get really excited and I just want to score another,” Leto said. “My focus is making sure we are doing everything we practiced and getting back in good habits. I think about that more than I think about how many I scored.”
Leto finished the day with a career-high nine points as she added an assist in the win as well.
Freshmen Kathryn Giroux and Elizabeth Mastrio both notched a pair in the game as well with the former assisting on Leto's fourth goal of the day as well.
Junior Taryn Deck scored once along with Courtney Weisse and Campbell Probert, while Deck also has a pair of helpers.
The game featured five lead changes in the first 35 minutes of play before Dartmouth finally took over for good with Deck's free-position goal to make the score 9-8. The Green and White never looked back at that point, building the largest lead of the day at 14-10, before holding off the Terriers' comeback bid in the final eight minutes as they scored three of the game's final four.
However, freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Wahle shook off the thoughts of BU's earlier potent attack down the stretch to make three of her seven saves in the final minutes to keep the home team up on the scoreboard and holding on for the non-conference victory.
“I think there were points in the game where she was having trouble finding the ball,” Patton said of her first-year keeper. “There were long spans where she wasn't seeing a lot of shots and I think that is tough for a goalkeeper. After the final timeout, we talked about what she needed to do and, once again, she came up huge again for us.
“We have a ton of confidence in Charlotte and the defensive group in front of her that has been forcing opponents into taking more challenging shots all year,” Patton added.
The Terriers' offense went through Amherst, New Hampshire, native Mickenzie Larivee who scored four goals. Ally Adams notched a hat trick of her own, while adding two assists. In the BU goal, Christine Laible also made seven saves in the losing effort.
The Big Green head to New Jersey on Saturday for their 2016 Ivy League opener at No. 9 Princeton. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
