WORCESTER, Mass. – The Big Green's 10th-ranked heavyweight rowing opened its 2016 spring racing campaign with a clean sweep of four races against No. 13 Columbia, MIT and Holy Cross on Saturday morning.
“Overall, I thought it was positive day of racing and a good start to the season for our guys,” head coach Wyatt Allen said. “Each crew did a nice job of executing under pressure and in some challenging race conditions, and we'll look to build off of these performances as we move forward.”
In the first race of the morning, Dartmouth's 3V (6:14.3) and 4V (6:28.6) crews finished in front of Holy Cross's 3V entry.
In the closest race of the day, the Big Green 2V (6:06.1) used a solid middle thousand to push out to a one-length win over Columbia (6:09.2). Holy Cross (6:37.6) and MIT (6:43.3) finished in third and fourth, respectively.
The Big Green's Varsity Eight got out of the blocks quickly, establishing nearly a three-second lead over Columbia in the first quarter of the race. At the finish, Dartmouth (6:08.6) finished eight seconds ahead of Columbia. MIT (6:23.3) and Holy Cross (6:27.5) were third and fourth.
Dartmouth heads to Derby, Connecticut, next Saturday to face top-ranked Yale.
